Before being a model

Andrej Pejic was born on August 8, 1991 in Tuyla, Bosnia-Herzegovina. His father is Croatian, and mother is Serbian. At 6 months old his mother had to flee from Bosnia where the war broke out. With her two little sons the woman ran away to neighboring Serbia. In 2000 the family settled in Melbourne, Australia, where Andrej went to local school.

Modeling Career

Andrej Pejic has always felt he was different from other boys. He liked to do girlie things. He was interested in dolls, dresses, and jewelry. So, when in 2008, at the age of 17, he was approached by an Italian scout Andrej realized what he wanted from this life. He sent his photographs to Chadwick Models agency and as he got the job he made the decision to defer university in order to pursue the modeling career.

Matthew Anderson, director of Chadwick Models in Melbourne recognized a flicker of the future in young Pejic. He said: “His beauty was extraordinary. He’s also intelligent and it’s amazing, really, that he survived growing up in Broadmeadows, that he’s just so comfortable in his own skin.”

After a few successful appearances in Melbourne’s Spring Fashion Week shows in 2008 Anderson decided to take a chance and packed Andrej Pejic off to London, then Paris, and Tokyo. No one could say with certainty if Andrej would be well accepted in big fashion capitals. Matthew Anderson commented: ”Andrej was definitely a calculated risk; we really weren’t sure how it would work out. In the global financial crisis, a lot of commercial decisions were being made above creative ones and that meant the strong man, Chesty Bond-types were more likely to work.”

However, photographers and designers liked the idea of using an androgynous model in their work. Andrej said: ”The photographers seemed to like my look. They talked about the extreme androgyny and commented a lot on how thin I am.”

Later, explaining success of Andrej Pejic Anderson said: ”Society and cultural values have changed, are changing. People – young, particularly – are more accepting of all kinds of sexuality and ways of life. It reminds me of the 1980s, when ambiguous sexuality was accepted and people weren’t ashamed to show it and sell it.”

Andrej Pejic commented on his popularity: “I think that people in the industry get bored easily especially now that everything has been “done“ and every so often they need new toys to play with.”

In 2010 Anrej Pejic’s career started developing incredibly fast. He signed with Storm Models agency and in April appeared in Wonderland editorial. In June he closed the spring Jean Paul Gaultier show in Paris causing a stir in the fashion industry. Everyone started talking about the rising star. Andrej also walked for John Galliano, Paul Smith, and Raf Simons during the season.

In the Fall 2010 Andrej Pejic posed for Japanese Vogue Hommes, French Vogue (September 2010 issue), Italian Vogue (November 2010 issue), Arena Homme + (Fall 2010 issue), and i-D (Winter 2010 issue).

In the early 2011 Andrej Pejic became the face of Marc by Marc Jacobs and posed for Jean Paul Gaultier spring campaign along with Karolina Kurkova.

In January 2011 Andrej Pejic closed the spring Jean Paul Gaultier couture show in Paris. He also walked at Custo Barcelona, Paul Smith, Jeremy Scott, Robert Geller, and Odyn Vovk winter shows.

In March 2011 Andrej Pejic appeared in Photo France Magazine, and in April he did Dazed & Confused pictorial named Gold Digger discovering new sides of his modeling personality. He also appeared in Vogue Australia April 2011 edition in Boy Wonder shoot and Polish glossy Viva! Moda Spring 2011 issue.

Although it is just the beginning of Andrej Pejic’s astounding successful career the model has already worked with such renowned photographers as Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Steven Meisel, Willy Vanderperre, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Karim Sadli, Aitken Jolly, Sabine Villiard, Max Doyle, Jez Smith and others.

Andrej Pejic admits the possibility of changing sex if a large brand like Victoria’s Secret offers him a job.

  • He’s beautiful and confidant. I hope he doesnt’ get a gender-change operation though; especially not for reasons like a big contract. He’s so naturally lovely i’d hate to see what so much surgery might do to him.
