Mirror foils, statement metal prints, sparkling materials and holographic finishes made a big splash at the Spring Summer 2013 fashion catwalks. Being spotted in nearly each show of the Fashion Week Fall 2013, the metallics offer a fresh way to bring a luxurious touch to your looks replacing the traditional colorful neon and pastel trends. Leading fashion houses like Mulberry, Alexander Wang and Burberry Prorsum stacked on the metallic trend in their Spring Summer 2013 collections and didn’t lose.

Francesca Burns, British Vogue fashion editor, commented on this loud trend:

The sheen that features heavily in the spring/summer 13 collections has magical qualities. When hit by light, one colour becomes many, while the gauzy fabrics float about the body like a mystical glow. Take note of Raf Simons at Dior and go for a sculpted iridescent top over micro shorts.

Burberry Prorsum and Jonathan Saunders stick to the clean-cut silhouettes and simple lines. Their garments with the classical design, which is never out of fashion, were spiced up by the metallic sheen of fabrics that added an edgy and statement feel to the collection.

Creative director of Burberry Prorsum – Christopher Bailey – included capes, dresses and even bikinis in the opulent metallic shades of blue, green, pink and yellow in the Spring Summer 2013 collection. Meanwhile Christian Dior layered the glossy garments with the bold stripes and delicate florals, which are also the key trends of this season.

If you are not daring enough to wear the head-to-toe metallic outfit, consider sequin-embellished items that are a more traditional and safe option. Diane von Furstenberg introduced the dresses that are richly embellished with colored pailettes, which look dressy and chic. Just Cavalli offers to team the sequin-decorated jumpers with simple denims and Converse for the effortless look with glam vibe.

Celebrities in return  didn’t fail to try this trend before it became widely spread. At the latest Oscars 2013 ceremony A-list female celebrities demonstrated an array of the metallic gowns. Stacy Keibler stunned on the red carpet wearing the floor-length gown with silver studs all over it by Naeem Khan, while Renee Zellweger went for the shiny gold Carolina Herrera gown with the simple silhouette.

Naomi Watts amazed everyone with her sequin-embellished Armani Privé gown with the cut out on the breast area, while Jennifer Hudson looked dazzling in the Roberto Cavalli gown in the beautiful midnight blue with sparkling metallic effect.

As for the accessories, try to keep them subtle or even refuse wearing them in order to balance the bold metallic. Metallics

From shiny suit fabrics to metallic finishes this Spring is all about the shine. Even shirts and shorts get metallic makeover. Pairing bold metallics with solids is a good idea as well as choosing only one item with metallic finish.

Another way to sport metallics is to opt for a subdued shiny suit in navy blue or pearl white and combine with a solid shirt. Brands Burberry Prorsum, Roberto Cavalli and Maison Martin Margiela went on to create metallic outerwear and even trousers and shirts whereas brands like Canali and Ermenegildo Zegna opted for shiny fabrics like satin.

Stripes were all over the runways in both menswear and womenswear. They come in various colors and sizes as well as in various clothing items from trousers to shirts and sweaters.

Camouflage

Camouflage spotted at Dries Van Noten, Valentino and many other shows is another trendy print of the season. It can be worn in outerwear, trousers or shirts. At Valentino the camo coat was paired with classic pleated trousers and a matching handbag.

Dries Van Noten combined camoflage prints in different colors as well as added different textures like lace, satin and fishnet. Choose different complementing camouflage prints for the outfit but avoid matching the top and the bottom or it will look more like a uniform.

Florals

Florals took over menswear appearing on everything from ties to coats. Florals can be intimidating but it doesn’t mean you cannot try them. Opt for a tie in floral print and see how it goes from there.

Bottega Veneta offered a faded floral-printed suit which is a great way to wear florals subtly. Then there are sports jackets like this one from Dirk Bikkemberg in floral prints which is another way to incorporate florals into your Spring wardrobe.

Light Knitwear

Knitwear doesn’t always come to mind when we think of Spring but designers offer light sweaters for the season. They are worn over shirts or on their own. These are perfect for transitions between seasons and can be worn casually or formally with a suit.

There are more sheer versions as well as the sweaters with patterns and chunky knit. Pair them with jeans or pleated trousers and some casual footwear.

Quilting

Quilting is also one of the trends spotted at Dries Van Noten, Nicole Farhi and Tim Coppens. It appears not only in jackets and vests but also in shorts and adds another detail to the outfit.

Denim Blazer

Denim jackets and blazers were seen at Giorgio Armani and Duckie Brown shows. They are casual and a bit controversial especially when paired with jeans.

To steer clear of  fashion faux pas avoid pairing denim with denim better yet go for something different like in the outfit by Alexis Mabille where a dark denim blazer is contrasted by white pants.

White Suit

White suit have been all over the runways and we cannot ignore them. Trouser suits, short suits, suits with matching white trech coats are all the rage for Spring/Summer 2013 and it’s no wonder since the white is such a summer-y color.

Fashion Trends For Spring Season

Monochromatic

It’s all black and white for this Spring. Even prints and patterns come in black and white, namely the omnipresent stripes, polka dot, houndstooth, and checkers. There are many other abstract designer prints in black and white which add more detail to the look. The classic monochrome combination is worn in suits, top and pant/skirt ensembles, blazers and even shoes.

In case you like prints and want to add color to your look go for designs of Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto, and Holly Fulton. Other colorful options include the many patchwork style outfits from brands like Fendi, Rodarte, Proenza Schouler and others.

Metallics

Metallics are everywhere this Spring. There are silver and gold metallic foil shoes, clutches and even clothing items like skirts, jackets and dresses as seen at Burberry Prorsum fashion show. Metallic panels and shiny fabrics also enhance the outfits of such designers as Diane von Furstenberg and Christian Dior.

Other shiny finishes were also spotted at Mary Katrantzou, Alexander McQueen, and Marchesa shows. Shiny satin was used in many collections as well. At Calvin Klein the suits were featured in champagne satin while in collection by Erdem it was teamed with lace panels.

Sheer Fabrics

Sheer fabrics and paneling were seen all over the runways during Spring 2013 Fashion Weeks. At Christopher Kane there were sheer fabric overlays while at Emilio Pucci the sheer garments were expertly combined with opaque ones.

The sheer overlaid skirt or hemline are perfect for rocking this trend. Though designers also offer items that feature patterns created using solid and sheer panels.

Ruffles

Ruffles were another reccuring trend on the runways. Balenciaga and Givenchy went for assymetrical ruffles that decorated the dresses while Gucci showed ruffles teamed with streamline silhouettes which made a nice contrast in shapes.

Ruffles can be tough to pull off but the key is to not overdo. Team ruffles with items that feature clean lines and simpler shapes. Since these particular ruffles are quite dramatic they don’t require too many accessories.

Oriental Style

Oriental style as seen at Emilio Pucci, Prada and other shows was translated into short kimono-like dresses with floral and other Oriental motifs. Hermes created an amazing colorful collection with some Oriental motifs accessorized with bright shoes and statement accessories.

Structured dresses and mixed prints make complex outfits so be sure to keep your accessories minimal when putting together outfits in this style.

Suits

Suit is a must-have of the season. Whether you need a strict one for the office or a bright one for the outings you can choose from the ones Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Mary Katrantzou, Jonathan Saunders, and many other brands demonstrated on the catwalk.

While some designers chose to focus solely on their suits, others went further to complete them with tops and accessories. Saint Laurent showed strict men’s style suits combined with intricate blouses and dramatic bows.

So, what is the floral trend of Fall/ Winter 2012/ 2013 like? Let’s see how designers represented it in their collections.

Floral Trend In Fall/ Winter 2012/ 2013 Collections

It is right to start from Dolce & Gabbana that showcased a few fantastic designs featuring floral trend during their Fall/ Winter 2012/ 2013 fashion show. Intricate floral embroidery was seen on everything from dresses and jumpsuits to bags and shoes.

Erdem florals were much darker and even a little gloomy but they were very beautiful, too.

Burberry Prorsum floral designs were muted, perfect for ladies who prefer monotone outfits but want a little change in their wardrobes.

Dresses in Temperley London Fall/ Winter 2012/ 2013 collection were bold and bright with flowers making them look lively and cheerful.

Osman mixed different florals making the trend even more complicated but at the same time more interesting.

Florals in McQ were cute and feminine, and being featured on full skirts they were edgy, too.

Marc Jacobs didn’t use florals as the focus in his collection, but those did play an important part balancing rather flamboyant outfits.

Before we turn to the advice, let’s find out what oversize garments are going to be trendy during Fall/ Winter 2012/ 2013.

What oversize items to wear

Coats – Coats come big this season, big and beautiful. Jil Sander coats are feminine and delicate. Mary Katrantzou and Francesco Scognamiglio coats are adorned with mesmerizing prints. Gucci and Moschino coats feature military elements.

Jackets, Sweaters, Cardigans and Tops – The variety is even larger here. Puffy rounded sleeves, asymmetrical hemlines, huge eccentric collars – are just a few elements you will have to choose from if you decide to buy an oversized top, jacket or a cardigan. Designers, who have presented their versions of these trendy items are Balenciaga, Chloe, Ports 1961 and others.

Trousers – We haven’t put the wide trousers (Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 trend) away yet when desgners offered us oversized trousers to try. They are the same but bigger, sometimes much bigger (See St.John, Sportmax, Robert Verino and MaxMara Fall/ Winter 2012/ 2013 collections).

Skirts and Dresses – While clinging silhouettes are always in vogue, oversize ones are not, but for Fall/ Winter 2012/ 2013 season you can make an exception and opt for puffy, ball-shaped and simply big skirts and dresses.

How to wear oversize fashion

•  Pair your oversize item with something skinny or tight-fitting to create a contrast.

•   Stay away from accessories to make the focus on an oversize item.

•   The bigger the better. Use your oversize item one size up. But if you feel you’ve gone too far, use a belt to make sure your figure isn’t swamped.

Statement trousers appeared in plenty in designers’ collections with each designer presenting it in his own way. Stella McCartney sent her models down the runway in pajama-style trousers, Anna Sui and Antonio Marras created wide-leg printed pants, while Salvatore Ferragamo played it safe and designed elegant cropped trousers you could wear to office.

Despite the fact statement trousers can look a bit intimidating, wearing them is not difficult. Pull the trend off by either pairing the pants with basic items in neutral colors or mixing them with other printed items (the brighter the better!).

Statement trousers are all about self-expression and standing out. This trend is not for shy girls, it’s for those who like to be different and tell a story with each their look.
