Before being a model
Crystal Renn was born on June 18, 1986 in Miami, Florida. In her teenage years Crystal and her family moved to the small town of Clinton, Mississippi where the girl went to charm school. At the age of 14 Crystal was spotted by a professional scout who offered her to become a model. She decided to try her luck and soon moved to New York to pursue the dream job.
Success was not immediate. Crystal was told to lose about a third of her total body weight to get the measurements of a size-zero model. She embarked on a severe weight loss regime that helped her to drop over 90 pounds within three years. Despite the fact she was often praised for her slim figure Crystal Renn had serious health problem which later developed into a health crisis. The eating disorder Crystal suffered from for a few years nearly cost her life.
In 2003 Crystal reassessed her life goals and stopped dieting. She gained over 70 pounds but was happy with her weight. She did not quit modeling though. The beauty consulted with Gary Dakin of Ford Models on plus-size modeling. After this she signed with the agency and started working in the 12+ division. This time Crystal became successful very fast. It was the best decision she had ever made in her life.
Crystal Renn has enjoyed posing for cameras of famed fashion photographers, including Steven Meisel, Ellen Von Unwerth, Ruven Afanador and Patrick Demarchelier. She has appeared in seven international Vogue editorials, Italian ELLE, Russian Harper’s Bazaar, V magazine, i-D, Vanity Fair and Arena Homme.
Crystal Renn has worked for many high-profile plus-size clothing manufacturers, such as Lane Bryant, Evans and Torrid. She has walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier, Zac Posen, Chanel, Vena Cava, Heatherette, and Elena Miro. Crystal graced multiple ad campaigns, including H&M, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gautier, Lane Bryant, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. Crystal Renn has also conducted on-air interviews on The Today Show, The View, and Oprah.
Crystal Renn has never tried to hide her sad story of struggling with weight. She openly talked about her problems and told how she achieved the international success being a plus-size model. She has even written a book titled Hungry: A Young Model’s Story of Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves telling about her experiences in the industry and several body type transformations. The book was authored in collaboration with Marjorie Ingall and released on September 8, 2009.
There is little information about Crystal Renn’s personal life. The supermodel tries to keep it secret. However, it is known that on June 30, 2007, Renn married her longtime boyfriend Gregory Vrecenak at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Manhattan, New York. But in the middle of 2009 the couple divorced. At the present time Crystal Renn is single and lives in Brooklyn, New York.
