Alexander Wang Debuts First Balenciaga Collection
Finally the day has come. Alexander Wang showed his debut collection as a Balenciaga creative director at Paris Fashion Week. The designer who also has his own eponymous label, which showed at New York Fashion Week was appointed as the new director after Nicholas Ghesquière left the label late last year. Wang’s first work has shown the other side of the designer. There is elegance and sophistication to his pieces and he is known for love of urban style.
While Alexander Wang has big shoes to fill he chose to go along with Balenciaga signature style. The designer spent a certain amount of time studying Balenciaga archives to learn the brand’s signature style and aesthetic. The collection is very refined and while safe in terms of monochrome color palette enhanced with gray marble-like veins it is still quite impressive and definitely differs from what we can see at Alexander Wang shows.
The collection’s assortment ranges from loose-fitting oversize tops and jackets to slim tailored trousers to beautiful evening numbers. There are shift dresses and skirt ensembles that feminine elegant silhouettes and oversize fur jackets that create a silhouette dynamic when paired with slim trousers.
To add texture to the outfits Wang used fur and crinkled leather as well as patterned fabrics to create statement elements in structured tops or dresses. He added fur sleeves to a couple of coats just like he did in his own collection but the rest of the collection was in Balenciaga style.
Having made his career with edgy urban wear Alexander Wang was not seen as the best choice for Balenciaga by some but it seems the young designer is meaning to prove them wrong. His first collection is quite elegant and promising. I’m already curious to see what’s the Spring 2014 collection will look like.
