Christina Applegate the ’09 Lee National Denim Day
Emmy Award-winning actress and star of ABC’s hit sitcom Samantha Who?, Christina Applegate, has announced to be the first repeat ambassador for Lee National Denim Day, one of the country’s largest single-day fundraisers for breast cancer, benefiting the Women’s Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF).
Applegate, who’s on the cover of People Magazine‘s ‘Most Beautiful’ issue (currently on newsstands), was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer in 2008.
She has survived and now is going to encourage people to wear their jeans on Friday, October 2, in exchange for a $5 donation to support breast cancer research funded by the Women’s Cancer Programs.
Lee National Denim Day is such an effective grassroots campaign and its importance has become even more real to me in this past year,” Applegate said. “By joining together on October 2, we can raise millions to support breast cancer research. It’s so simple and so powerful. I truly believe that events like this help save lives.”
The money received through the campaign will help to support Lee Laboratories nationwide that work to find more effective, less toxic treatments for breast cancer, fund EIF’s Breast Biomarker Discovery Project led by scientists to develop a blood test for earlier detection of breast cancer, create resources with the National Breast Cancer Coalition to offer patients with breast cancer evidence-based information, and train advocates nationwide.
Besides, this year, the money will also support Applegate’s just launched foundation Right Action for Women.
The foundation provides women with information about what it means to be at “high risk” for breast cancer and encourage them to visit their doctors and talk about appropriate screening.
Aid is also to be provided to individuals who are at increased risk for breast cancer and do not have insurance or the finances to pay for expensive breast screenings.
Proceeds from the program, which has already raised over 75 million dollars since its inception in 1996, will benefit Women’s Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. Log on now to denimday.com to learn more about Lee National Denim Day and register your own group, or just support any existing team.
As an added incentive, everyone who signs up by May 21 will have an opportunity to win one of 100 free Denim Day tote bags.
To explain why Applegate was chosen to be the face of the campaign Liz Cahill, VP of Marketing and Communications for Lee Jeans said:
We’ve watched Christina carry herself with such grace over the past year and we couldn’t be happier to have her join us again for Lee National Denim Day.”
Early detection, along with the translational research being conducted through our Lee Labs, will help us make significant strides in the fight against breast cancer. And through our work with NBCC, we want to arm people with the facts to make informed decisions about how to deal with a diagnosis.”
