Karl Lagerfeld against ‘fat mummies’
Another hysteria is brought up in the fashion world. Had we barely finished discussing skin color discrimination issues when weight discrimination issues got as hot.
The whole subjet started when one of German magazines, Brigitte, told they would no longer publish fashion photographs of skinny models and would use women of normal weight instead. The explanation is simple enough. They got tired of adding curves to thin girls to make those look more similar to the majority of German women.
Editor Andrea Lebert commented:
We will show women that have their own identity – the 18-year-old A-level student, the company chairwoman, the musician, the footballer.”
The statement infuriated Karl Lagerfeld. He said it were ‘fat mummies’ who needed to see bodies similar to their own and not be reminded about their weight problems.

He said:
These are fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the television, saying that thin models are. Fashion is all about dreams and illusions, and no one wants to see round women.”
The 71-year-old Chanel designer said the magazine’s decision was ‘absurd’.
Another designer, John Ribbe, has also expressed his opinion on the question, saying the row over models’ weight is becoming hysterical’.
He added:
It’s just as much a cliche as saying that all models take drugs and get drunk at sex orgies. 90 per cent of them are quite normal, properly proportioned girls with less fat and more muscles who also eat pizzas and burgers.”
However, Brigitte magazine are not going to change their plans. They are to release their first edition with non-professional models on 2 January and are asking readers to sign up for photo sessions.
Tell me what you think about it. I’m really interested in your opinions.

The reality is probably somewhere in the middle. I can see both sides. Though, the magazine can convey any image they wish. It’s their magazine!
