‘Curves ahead!’ Campaign: Pros and Cons
The discussion about using thin models in fashion more often than plus-size ones is getting hotter and hotter. While some designers still like dressing slim women others tend to change their views and focus on bigger ladies. This shift to women of healthier shapes is reasonable enough as anorexia is a disease of modern teenage girls who look at skinny models and are ready to starve to achieve similar looks.

The campaign ‘Curves ahead!’ features five plus-size models demonstrating us their curvy bodies. The women look good and happy with their lives. They aren’t afraid to show their imperfect bottoms, love handles and other stuff we always try to hide.

Some pictures show models dressed fashionably and some feature them almost nude or completely nude.

The models look good but I don’t think their bodies are to show this way. This isn’t the healthy size. In my opinion, the women need to lose weight.

Speaking about celebrity figures I would say Scarlett Johansson is the most perfect example of a healthy-sized woman. She is slim enough and has curves.

In modelling industry Lara Stone can be described as a healthy-sized model and her shape should be a goal to reach for ordinary women.

While all the above models are beautiful some photos are better than others…I don’t think it is a matter of size as photo content. The first photo is terrible..maybe it is the position of the model.
For all of you that have negative things to say about these models, you should have your head & eyes examined! These are some of the prettiest women that happen to be models, I have ever seen… Who gets to decide what bottom is imperfect? or that love handles are a flaw? Society? Who is Society? A diverse group of beautiful people that are not created equal, but should be appreciated equally with styles that fit there size & shape.
Bravo for those that have eyes and can truly see!
Well I don’t think these women need to loose any weight. ( That’s up to them.) They are absoloutely Gorgeous!!!.
It scares me to see very thin models, they look very unhealthy and weak. Women are supposed to have curves!!
“Healthy-sized?” As long as the woman does not have any health problems and is happy with herself, that is her healthy size. Many super skinny women and plus-sized women are healthy and happy. One’s body shape depends on their genetics, bone sizes, height, etc.
The first photo does have an akward pose, but all the models are very beautiful. They are a bit overweight though, there’s something called BMI (Body Max Index) and I think they’re a bit past over their healthy BMI (everyone has a different BMI according to height, weight and bone structure). With that said, it is no lie that they aren’r any less healthy than scrawny runway models, but there has to be something in between for both. And there is, celebrities like Scarlett Johanson, Megan Fox, Rihanna and Beyonce just to name a few. They all have curvy bodies but of a healthy weight, because curves ARE beautiful. So why can’t they find “plus-size“ models that are in-between, instead of photographing overweight ones?
Response to M.C.
Rihanna? Curvy? You’re weird.
I think all the models are all beautiful…but real woman is real plus size, and thats the look you should be looking for…. Response to M.C …you are talking about fake and made up as beyonce and rihanna to name a few. Real plus size women is the one’s you see every day and can still be healthy… a real women should love the body god gave them…every body can’t be beyonce or rihanna. STAY REAL!
All these ladies are gorgeous just the way they are! There should be more ads taken of real women- small, big AND in between! We’re all different and we’re all beautiful!
The models in the third photo look completely normal to me, actually–not at all like they need to lose weight.
These women are all gorgeous, and I am glad they are modeling as they are instead of trying to lose weight to reach a nearly impossible standard.
Bottom line women come in all different shapes and sizes! And its all just apart of the diverse and beautiful world we live in. Celebrities can be real problems when it comes to the word “Beautiful”, because not everyone has world class trainers to work out with them! Otherwise they would probablly not be that size either. People who like to sit there and define what is and isn’t “Beautiful” is wrong. Because we are all beautiful in our own ways! And without PHOTOSHOP alot of those supposedly “Beautiful” people probablly would look the same as we REAL woman. And I LOVE the fact how alot of people define beauty as the girls who starve themselves everyday and are bony and weak, because I and I would have to say alot of the world would say that is DISGUSTING and truly unattractive. Bottom line BE YOURSELF AND BE HAPPY :)
I find it offensive that the author thinks these models need to lose weight.
In my opinion, most models need to GAIN weight…why isn’t that a hot topic like plus size models are?
The average woman in the US/Canada is a size 14, and these women are probably in between a 12, 14 or 16. These women are beautiful, voluptuous and should be so proud of their bodies! They are toned, strong and healthy.
Side note to M.C…
get some glasses.
“This shift to women of healthier shapes is reasonable enough as anorexia is a disease of modern teenage girls who look at skinny models and are ready to starve to achieve similar looks.”
Uhhh…no.
Anorexia is a disease that has transcended centuries, probably even milennia. While the media does place standards on both males and females, the modern media is not the only cause of eating disorders. Indeed, there are genetic factors that play into the development of many cases of anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating/binge eating. And even in cultures where Western ideals of “thin” as beautiful are not present and not known of, anorexia and other eating disorders have occurred.
Please check your facts before you make over-general statements.
It is good to shift attention from thin models to the curvy ones. Thing is, this move should populate other media as well. Celebrities nowadays also play a big role in influencing…models aren’t just the ones.
I competely agree with you. These plus size women look like they are overweight which is just as unhealthy as being too skinny. I think this article address a very important issue that instead of setting up healthy role models we get overwieght ones and convince ourselves that that is ok and normal. Just because the average size is 12,14, and 16 does not mean that those are the sizes to aspire to. Most people in this country our overweight, the “average” woman is over weight. It’s an epidemic that needs to be stopped, not encouraged and normalized by producing overweight models. Of course my comments are to be taken with a grain of salt, as I am not these models’ doctor and I don’t know what their actual height/weight/bone structure ratio is. However, they for the most part don’t look like active, fit women.
Above models are with good figures. It is no need to lose weight
That is supposed to be “curves”? That’s fat rolls not curves… I think healthy weight is whatever weight you are (based on your frame and height) when you don’t have extra fat. These models however have a lot of visible fat rolls. I don’t see how it’s supposed to be “healthy”.
Wow. No wonder the world is in the state it is today. Those models are beautiful. “Plus size” means that they are larger than the so-called “ideal” proportions – that is a given, so who knows why people would expect these shots to look like photos out of Vogue. I don’t know who people think they are to classify people as fat vs curvy vs unhealthy. I agree with Random – these ladies are proud of their bodies. I want all the children growing up now to see that beautiful doesn’t mean rail thin, and I hope they refuse to buy into commercial ideals of beauty that are unattainable for most. Instill confidence – not shame!!!!!!!
Yeah ok they look great, but lets face this! Thats not healthy eighter! Who is there to decide whats ok and not? If size zero is too thin, then I say thats too fat.
The whole debate is silly. Some people don’t like women with rolls, some people don’t like women with boobs that are a certain size, some people don’t like women who are too thin and some people don’t like women who have too much butt, or hips, or too little butt or hips. So shut up. These women are published in magazines and you all sit in your homes on your computers critiquing them as if anyone gives a damn about your personal opinion. Beauty is and always has been subjective so if you think you can form some educated opinion about what beauty really is or who should be allowed to be photographed in a magazine, then you’re an idiot, because no one can truly be “educated” in such an area. Opinions are opinions for a reason. Unless you know these girls personally, you’ve got not data to back up your hypothesis that these girls are “overweight”. So please, do us all a favor and keep your mouth shut. Or don’t. But only if you have a perfect life and a perfect body and ALWAYS eat the right things, never slipping into eating the bad things, and can get hired to look as good as these girls do. Ugh. Morons.
Best post by Danielle. Thank you Danielle!
What is healthy? We tend to assume that people who are fat are unhealthy when someone who is skinny is just as likely to have diabetes but we don’t point at them and say “UNHEALTHY!” That’s because every time a disease was found researchers always blamed obesity, they’re actually finding in recent studies that obesity might have nothing to do with it. Besides you’re just saying they have to lose weight because they’re not the models you’re used to seeing, that’s how the media has gotten to your brain. It is their job after all. Now that people are trying to change so people aren’t obsessively starving themselves, you’re bashing them, way to be on the media’s side….
And I agree with Danielle!
reply to M.C…….>
BMI has been discredited MANY MANY TIMES! it is inaccurate and doesnt take all elements into account. According to BMI very fit athletes are borderline obese and also ( from my work experience) emaciated drug users that only eat once a day or less are ”within the perfect range of their BMI”!!! COME AGAIN!!
You can have your opinion of what’s attractive, but not of what’s healthy. These women are overweight and borderline obese. Carrying this much weight comes with a huge set of health problems – not least of which is America’s #1 killer, heart disease. No man with options would date a woman this fat (and liable to get fatter). Celebrating rolls of fat as “curves” sends a dangerous message. Shaming men for wanting healthy, in shape women is even worse.
These chics are fat. Period!
Curves are ART! and these women are art too <3 Amazing faces and juicy bodies!! <3 Congrats
