Paris Fashion Week is the last in a series to show us the designers’ creations. Some collections were simple but nice; others were extravagant and full of unusual designs.
Alexander McQueen’s range was far from ordinary ready-to-wear line. It was fantastic; I would call it even fantastical!
Basically McQueen is a couturier who always makes me say WOW. His flight of fantasy is not limited to general vision of life. He always invents something that strikes, amazes and makes people hold their breath.
His Autumn-Winter 2009 line was again a miraculous show that surprised everyone who saw it. Models with clown-like lips and almost wax faces rocked terrific garments down the catwalk. Some of the items were bird-inspired.
That was seen in patterns as well as entire garments which reminded bird figures rather than people’s ones. Besides, there were lots on animal-inspired items, such as furs and reptile prints.
The collection also included pieces, like a couple of swag-sided coats, that seemed to be made of trash bags, accessorized with aluminum cans wrapped in plastic as headgear.
There were many boxy jackets, airy gazar dresses, tailored coats, nipped in the waist. Besides, McQueen was brave enough to include over-the-top versions of Dior’s famous houndstooth pattern and Chanel’s tweed suits.
But to my mind hats were the focus of the range. They were made from open umbrellas, lampshades, hubcaps, and large curlers which were wrapped in clear plastic film or bin liners. Looked great!
Well, some critics say the line of painfully theatrical costumes was ugly and misogynistic.
Others were energized by the sheer spectacle, as well as the couture-level drama in the presentation of the garments.
My opinion is that although the line may be highly impractical it is to be an integral part of fashion evolution. It is unusual and those who like to stand out will take some of the items into their wardrobes to create the unforgettable images on the red carpet or even in everyday life.
However, I think McQueen’s collection didn’t push fashion anywhere new. It has marked that in the state of a collapsed economy we don’t know how to move forward. Probably he is true. What do you think about it?
