Dolce & Gabbana Autumn-Winter 2009
Dolce&Gabbana took legendary Elsa Schiaparelli as an inspiration for their Fall 2009 collection.
She had been able to survive in tough and weird times and more so she could have made her surrealist glamour work for her! Thus, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana decided to take the designer’s most famous invention – the ballooning shoulder – and introduce it into their line created during no less tough times.
The result was a tremendous success. When most of couturiers prefer to cut down on their expenses Dolce&Gabbana have no even a hint to that.
Their garments were all about glamour, chic and sophistication. The show of the world-known fashion brand was attended by plenty of celebrities which just proved that big names like big fashion.
The list of famous attendees included Scarlett Johansson, Kate Hudson, Naomi Watts, Freida Pinto, Eva Mendes, and many others.
The collection wasn’t much bright except for those sparkling pink items, and generally was all black and grey that doesn’t make it look worse or less luxurious.
The thirties and forties references played through the displaced gloves used as headpieces and scarves, the shell-shaped buttons, the huge wartime suede platform wedges, the reverence to extreme, I would even call that shocking, pink, and, of course, those enormous, puffed-up sleeves, rising up in some cases to earlobe level (by the way, they were obviously the focus of the collection!).
The fabrics used to make the range were truly sumptuous. Beside ordinarily used satin and crinoline, loads of fox, dyed goat hair, mink, and rich brocades were worked into narrow-waisted silhouettes, alternating occasionally with bell-shaped skirts.
And of course Dolce & Gabbana used their house identity that was expressed this time in Sicilian corseted and transparent lingerie dresses and Schiap-shaped, counterpointed by black tuxedo suits.
At the end of the presentation the views had an opportunity to admire pretty dresses and skirts with Marilyn Monroe photo prints spreading all over. Nice, isn’t it?
