How to Choose a Maternity Wedding Dress
Every girl dreams about her big day planning all those procedures that make the day so nice and memorable. And of course, each of us reflects upon the style of her dress.
But with the modern tendency of getting married being pregnant the dilemma of choosing a gown may seem to be really unsolvable.
However, designers are smart enough to understand there is a new market niche that has to be filled as soon as possible.
Thus, nowadays we already have some of them specializing particularly on maternity dresses. There are specialized stores either which sell everything you may need for your important celebration.
Here I’d like to give you some advice on choosing the gown of your dream.
First of all you should find a bridal shop in your area which offers maternity gowns.
Then make an appointment to try several on. If you have a specific gown in mind, call ahead to ensure that they have a sample gown in your size to try on.
When you have made your choice already find out what the store’s delivery policy is. You must do that before you agree to purchase a maternity wedding gown.
The reason is that most specialty bridal stores require up to 6 months to deliver “couture”- level gowns, while off-the-rack and sample dresses can generally be brought to your home within a few weeks.
And one more thing about stores: schedule a fitting just before the wedding.
Weeks will work if the store needs that much time to alter the dress, but days would be lot better, especially if you’re in your third trimester.
This will give you the perfect fit on wedding day.
Now about dresses themselves.
Decide how you want the dress to fit. You can choose a tight fitting dress that accentuates your tummy or go with something looser fitting.
Most of brides would like to draw attention away from their bellies. To do that, choose dresses which hang loosely from just below the bust.
Think about getting a dress with an empire waist. This style works well with growing bellies.
If you feel confident about your pregnancy, opt for gowns which highlight your figure by selecting sheaths and more fitted gowns made from stretch silks or material cut on the bias.
This fabric will cling to your natural curves and allow everyone to see your confidence shining through.
To visually balance your figure, choose a dress with interesting embroidery or trim at the bust.
These embellishments will draw the eye up the body and distract from any figure flaws you want to de-emphasize.
But stay away from dresses with lots of bows and ruffles; these will add bulk to your look.
When you are unsure of how big your belly is on your wedding day, try on wedding dresses with padding to simulate the stage of pregnancy you will be at.
Most maternity and bridal stores have these pads available in the dressing room.
Avoid dresses with much boning or lacing as it may cause harm to you and your unborn child.
Do keep in mind the frequency of your trips to the ladies’ room when you select a dress. Ideally, you should be as unencumbered by difficult closures or petticoats as possible.
Take a pair of comfortable dress shoes with you when you go to try on a wedding dress. The shoes must be similar to the ones you will wear on your big day.
The height of your heel will influence the way your dress hangs and looks.
The last but not the least, many people think a pregnant bride should not wear white. A complete nonsense!!! You can wear white and you can wear whatever you want on your big day!
Don’t listen to anybody. Choose the style and the color you like and feel nice about!
Good luck, dear wifes-and-mothers-to-be!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I’m pregnant and going to get married soon. but our big day won’t be soon and when it happens i’ll be in my trimester. so your tips are really very helpful. i haven’t heard anything about padding before, so i’ll try on wedding gowns using them
Loads of good advice in this article – one extra thing to consider is the maternity lingerie you plan to wear as a foundation to your maternity weddin dress. Strapless dresses might be out of the running if you are uncomfortabel without a bra … but there are lots of pretty optios with straps you could easily wear with a maternity bra too!
THANK YOU! I’m 3 months pregnant and already ballooning out. The doc is saying it might be twins. ?!?!? I’m getting married in 31 days and the wedding dress has been the hardest thing. I will be a little over 4 months pregnant, already in my 2nd trimester, and more than likely will need a dress to make my belly more attractive. :-) THANKS!
