Milly by Michelle Smith Spring/Summer 09

Milly by Michelle Smith Runway Show, Promenade, New York City Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2009

It’s hard to impress me with the kind of such fashion I should say, BUT… I did like the Milly collection!

Being a student Michelle took a trip to Paris that influenced her future fundamentally – she decided to become a fashion designer.

She left Connecticut for New York to make her dream come true. The basic idea of her designer’s dream was the outwear collection which would force a man to ask a woman out on a date undoubtedly.

So, that led her to maintain her fashion line seven years ago. She’s heading it successively together with her husband.

Now, about her Spring/Summer 2009 collection…

First of all the most notable is the colors’ variation.

Michelle embraced very trendy white, gold, chocolate, sun colors harmonizing them with coconut, ecru, bark, mocha, olive, bronzed metallic, aqua, persimmon, watermelon, lavender, chartreuse, citron, and orchid in the collection!

The collection is like the spring itself – different, fresh, bright, famine and skittish.

45 impressive looks for Spring-Summer 2009 included bikinis, blouses, dresses, coats, sweaters, trousers, shorts, jackets, and caftans.

The collection elicited a 70s feel as models hit the runaway to the Doors song “Love her madly.”

Think ring bikinis as well as crocheted bikinis; Nehru jackets, embroidery on dresses, shorts, and tops; asymmetrical looks, hand beaded sweater vests, hand beaded bolero sweaters, and lots of ruffled looks for a sexy, flirty look.

A few of the highlights included a Lavender silk crepe-de-chine lace trim dress; Aqua silk chiffon floral tie-dye print ruffle dress; Citron silk georgette Indian trellis print butterfly-sleeve dress; Watermelon silk chiffon floral tie-dye long ruffle dress with bark cotton crochet bikini; and Wild paisley silk jacquard caftan.

Milly’s details take us somewhere that other collections haven’t for Spring/Summer — adding some fun fringe, lace and tassels to play with for the season.

There were also some accessories including the tassels in necklace form, big chunky bead necklaces, and all kinds of handbags.

I was pretty pleased that Michelle carried about the hair décor for the upcoming spring! The chocolate, white beanies are not the point every one rush to wear of course, but that was Michelle Smith’s vision any way!

Her inspiration was obvious enough. She used the outline of a gorgeous Seventies woman sporting oversized sunglasses and laden with folk jewellery (the tassle necklaces may just spark a cult following next spring), and jazzy ethnic prints, rope belts.

Milly’s aesthetic for Spring is about loose garments that still maintain a waistline, mixed with classic, more fitted pieces.

The Milly collection makes me believe that the new, colorful and lively spring is near!
