The most interesting thing for me about Balenciaga Spring/ Summer 2011 collection was the cast of models who showcased the clothing on the runway. The three first girls were absolutely new to the fashion industry, they’d been spotted right in the street by Balenciaga team. Such an unexpected move! Then in the middle of the show we could see well-known faces: Gisele Bündchen, Amber Valletta, Carolyn Murphy, Stella Tennant, Freja Beha Erichsen and of course five-month-pregnant Miranda Kerr. However, the beauties appeared at the catwalk bare-faced, Ghesquière wanted them to be as unnoticed as possible to attract attention to the creations rather than the girls walking.
The Balenciaga designer said before the fashion show:
It was important not to disguise them. I didn’t want clones.”
Garments in Balenciaga Spring/ Summer 2011 impressed with their wearability, something that Ghesquière rarely pays attention to. Despite the fact the pieces looked a bit weird they could be ideally adapted into the wardrobe of the modern girl.
The focus of the collection was definitely on the cocooning shape of pied de coq coats that came in different colors starting from subdued brown to bright red and electric blue.
Pants that were cut at ankles and had some free space for one shirt panel to hang loosely, asymmetrical figure-hugging dresses, sheer shirts with mini tops underneath – all looked great and new. As for shoes, they didn’t look as pretty to me as the clothes, but that largely depends on the taste.
