Nina Garcia is a woman who knows everything about fashion. She’s been working in the industry for over 30 years and this fantastic experience allows her to give advice from the professional point of view. She’s an author of a few books dedicated to fashion where she tells her readers how to dress to always look stylish, what items should be in every girl’s wardrobe and gives tips on how to co-ordinate clothing. General words apart, I’m going to publish 10 of her pieces of advice concerning fashion that you will find useful.
Nina Garcia believes that when it comes to style there are no rules, instruction or principles to follow. However, there are ten things which are basics – and these every fashionista should know and use when creating her looks. Nina says a real style icon likes to break stereotypes and ignore trends but she ALWAYS considers these ten tips.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 1. ‘Filter’ your wardrobe.
Become your own fashion director. Imagine you must make a few worthy looks. What will you start from? You’ll look through all the pieces available in your wardrobe and choose the key ones that look great. If something doesn’t look and fit well, get rid of it, you don’t need ill-fitting garments. Out of twenty you might choose only five things but those will make you look like a princess. When you have finished with the selection try to analyze what you’ve done and understand which clothes you should buy from now on and use this new knowledge every time you go shopping.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 2. Hire a professional tailor.
A good tailor is as necessary as air and worth every cent he earns. Try to make friends with him, take interest in his life, praise his work and pay him well, because he is going to be one of the most important people in your life. Before you go to your tailor find items you like (you can try those on in changing rooms of a store, for example). Pay attention to the design, seams; think about what will make you look slimmer, taller, better… This will help you know better what you need from the tailor.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 3. Invest into key pieces.
Every wardrobe should be based on key clothing pieces and accessories which can be well combined with almost everything and never come out of vogue. The list of key pieces below is not subject to time, trends or geography. They are equally essential in New York, London and Paris and can be worn for years.
Key pieces of the wardrobe:
1) little black dress;
2) white shirt;
3) luxurious high heels;
4) cashmere cardigan;
5) trench coat;
7) classic watch;
8) diamonds (can be fake);
9) flat shoes;
10) chic bag.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 4. Combine clothes.
It might sound ridiculous but practice shows that soft items are perfectly combined with rigid ones, elegant ones with casual pieces. A stylish woman always knows what to combine and how to do this. Style is exactly an ability to make unusual combinations out of usual things. Of course to do that experience is necessary. But remember one thing: the look has to be natural.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 5. Power of accessories.
While miniskirts and skinny jeans are unsafe – once you gain a few pounds they’ll show it all!!! – shoes, necklaces and bags will never do that to you. They will always make you look more confident and show everyone how terrific you are. Famous style icons have always understood the power of accessories: Jacky Onassis and her glasses, Audrey Hepburn and her scarf, Elisabeth Taylor and her diamonds. You don’t have to don an ethereal dress to a party, just add a bright detail and you’re in the center of attention.
Accessories should be chosen artistically and according to your individuality. Wear pieces that are important to you: your grandmother’s pendant or an ethnic bracelet. By be careful not to overdo. Don’t wear a massive necklace and big earrings together. Too much of a good thing is bad.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 6. Shoes are above all.
It is impossible to have too many pairs of high heels. If anyone tries to convince you it is not true, just smile and do your thing. High heels can do a lot. They can improve your mood, posture and turn a dull outfit into a fantastic one. And legs will look perfect.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 7. Don’t be a fashion victim.
A trendy bag (or anything) isn’t the best item you can invest into. Such a bag will hardly make you look unique because in a few weeks many other women will have the same bag and you all will look common. It is not easy to spot a fashion victim – just count a number of designer items on her.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 8. Money is not everything.
Fashion is expensive, style is not. Many stylish girls are not rich. To add to this, girls who have less money to spare are usually more stylish. The fact is they have to be more particular because they can’t follow fashion trends blindly. They think more about each purchase this way improving the skill of combining pricey designer things with cheaper and simper ones.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 9. Invest into pieces that look chic.
Make sure you buy items that look wonderful, spectacular and unforgettable: a leopard-printed coat, a beautiful dress, a chic necklace or something of this kind. You’ll recognize the piece as soon as you see it. It might cost a fortune but it is worth it. First of all because you’ll know you look gorgeous in it. And secondly, you’ll be sure everyone believes you look gorgeous wearing it. Besides, it will stay with you forever.
Nina Garcia’s Tip 10. Imperfection is perfect.
Nina Garcia names it ‘Kate Moss’ factor’. You can never say she has taken much effort. Something is always wrong: her hair, accessories, a rumpled skirt… But she does look great wearing all these.
