A Fashion Blast from the Past – Denim

Remember the 90s when all anyone seemed to wear was denim, scuffed-up cons, lumberjack shirts and band tees? It might seem like all of these are relics of a by-gone era, but a couple of these old steadfasts have been making their way out of the attic and back into our closets in recent years. The lumberjack shirt had its revival in 2009 and is still going strong in 2011 and now it is denim’s turn to return from fashion exile and back to fashion boutiques.

This season trendsetters sought to reclaim a fashion no-no that would have got the fashion police called on you a decade ago. Double denim, a look previously known as the Texan Tuxedo, lost its appeal after Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake made the unfortunate decision to turn up to the 2001 VMA awards in matching double denim outfits. Thankfully the style has been revitalised by fashion leaders such as Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and Sienna Miller by pairing flattering cuts and shades of this versatile fabric together. Light shades on top of dark are the most flattering so coupling a light denim shirt with darker jeans or a pair of stylish cut offs is the best way to go to prevent you looking as if you just walked out of a time machine!

If you’re not a fan of the blue on blue denim look you can always mix it up a bit by slipping into your favourite pair of white denim jeans, shorts or trousers and topping it off with a dark denim shirt. For hotter summer days where denim is just too constricting, cut off denim shorts and sleeveless western-style shirts are lifelines for this trend, but avoid wearing them together at all costs. Steer clear of cut-off denim skirts as this is one denim fashion trend that won’t be making a comeback for anyone older than 11!

This summer trendsetters have also been stepping out in an old stalwart of the grungy 90s – the denim jacket! Only this time the jacket isn’t coupled with punky tees or scruffy shirts, but with elegant blouses, summer dresses, shirred shirts and designer tunics. Style mavens have been layering snug fitting, worn and deconstructed denim jackets over feminine looks to give them an edgy update. This look has been recently sported by Pippa Middleton, Liu Wen and Cameron Diaz and has replaced the leather bomber in as the style icon’s off-duty jacket of choice.

What do you think about denim’s comeback? Will you be flashing the double denim trend this summer?
