We’re only a month into 2012 and, for many of us, cold weather still hangs in the air and traces of snow still sit on the ground. It’s understandable if winter seems endless and summer feels as though it is a lifetime away. But in reality, February will turn into spring before you know it, and warmer temperatures are not far behind. And, as soon as the clouds part and that first summery day arrives, your mind will likely jump ahead to July and August. It’s almost beach season, you’ll think. I need to get prepared!
No matter what you have planned for the upcoming summer, whether you expect to work long hours or go on a road trip, welcome a new family member or receive a black diamond engagement ring, there’s a good chance that you’ll trek out to the beach at some point if you live anywhere near a coast. If not, you’ll probably still spend some time relaxing at a swimming pool. One thing is clear either way: you’re going to need a swimsuit.

We all know that styles and trends change from year to year in the fashion world. What was hot last year may fall to the rummage bin the next, and vice versa. The same is true when swimsuits are concerned. So even if you own a suit, you may find that it may look “so 2011” if you don it on the beach in 2012.
What, then, are expected trends for swimwear this summer? What should the beachgoer look to wear if they want to welcome the 2012 season in style? Here are a few suggestions:
-Bright colors. While summer is always the season when the dull, faded tones of winter give way to more lively and festive colors, fashion experts predict an even stronger affinity for brightness and boldness this summer. Expect to see swimwear that has airy, clashing, and layered colors that are designed to capture your attention in a fun way.

-One-piece suits. A hallmark of swimming’s earlier days, many though that the one-piece suit would go the way of the dodo bird when the two-piece bikini began to grow in prominence. While the one-piece variety has certainly taken a backseat in popularity in recent years, it started to regain some fashion momentum next summer. We can expect that this momentum will only accelerate in 2012.
-Wide brimmed hats. In another throwback to an earlier era, hats have become a much more fashionable accessory in recent years. While this was at first limited to more dressy attire, it appears as though they have finally made their way back onto the beach, as well. A simple white hat can keep you cool in the hot sun while also providing a serene contrast against the clashing colors of your one-piece suit.

These are three of the main trends we can expect in beach-going fashion in 2012. If you’re looking to be at the forefront of these fashions, you may want to ditch last year’s bikini and search out something more colorful and old-school. And you may want to start looking now. Even though it doesn’t feel like it, summer really is just right around the corner.
