Last Sunday, Rihanna was spotted entering Da Silvano’s in the West Village wearing a half-mesh black top that exposed the Grammy Award winner’s breasts and sometimes her nipples. In addition, the 24-year-old singer was sporting distressed-looking stone washes and tan construction boots. But it was the revealing top that caused Tweets including the words “Rihanna” and “boobs” to explode Sunday evening and into the following day.
The attention was further fueled by People Magazine running a story on the incident on Monday morning. Included with the blurb about the Barbadian’s boobies being slightly exposed was an online poll asking readers whether or not Rihanna had crossed the line. Respondents overwhelmingly believed she had indeed gone too far, with 84% saying she needs to cover up more.
Without the added allure of a beau of late (is she still dating Dudley O’Shaughnessy?) and thus not even a shred of speculation regarding the purchase of potential engagement rings, Rihanna has to accept that her actions in public will be interpreted by the pop culture press as scandalous attention-grabbing. Then again, it’s not as though she didn’t know she’d be photographed in that top, so who’s to say who and who isn’t manufacturing a story on an otherwise slow Sunday.
To be perfectly honest, the hybrid mesh top she was wearing, with the right colored undershirt, would be a fantastically punkish fashion statement this season. And if you think you can pull it off without something underneath, then that’s your prerogative as much as it was hers.
