Tips for choosing swimwear: Hourglass Figures

If you are a woman of an hourglass figure you are lucky as your shape is considered ideal. Besides, whatever you wear looks well on you. Still, you can flatter your assets more if you know how to choose clothes that look best on you.

The most important thing you should keep in mind is the size – you need to choose the right size of your garments. Your breast should be supported well and the waist cinches perfectly.

Now let’s talk about swimsuit. With your body type you can wear almost any type of swimwear and look good. It’s all about how comfortable you are with your body, how much skin you want to show and what areas you want to play up or down.

The best swimwear tops

If you have modest breasts (not overly endowed) then halter or triangle bikini tops will look wonderful on you. These types of cuts in a bikini top will show off your bust line. To keep your hourglass look pair this type of top with a triangular shaped bottom.

In case your bust is large, a bikini top that doesn’t provide enough support (and usually they don’t) will look bad on you. However you can find a top that fits you well and has enough support.

Another possible choice to flaunt your curves is a one piece bathing suit that has good built in bust support and a full back.

The best swimwear bottoms

Women of hourglass body types can draw attention to their legs and make them look longer and leaner by wearing a swimsuit bottom that is cut high on the sides.

Women of these shapes can wear bikinis as well even if they are plus size. However, you will look better in a swimsuit with high waist bottom and supportive top rather than a little string bikini.

Swimwear general rules

When choosing your swimwear you should understand that it’s not much different than selecting other clothing items. Pay attention to color and patterns.

If you favor patterns you should know that attention will be drawn to that particular area. Be careful with stripes. Horizontal stripes look well on boyish figures only.

To create a slimmer waist purchase a suit that’s a solid color with a different colored waistline.
When you pick up a one piece suit, opt for one that doesn’t bunch or creep up on you.

If you want to look slimmer generally, buy higher Lycra content suits, darker colors and smaller patterns as opposed to large floral prints.

If you have a full hourglass figure you may have more problems in choosing the swimwear that fits you and looks well on you.

However, there are styles that have been perfectly made for fuller hourglass figures. Here they are:

Bandeau Swimsuits

Bandeau swimsuits came to us from the past and are a nice invention for fuller figured women.. A bandeau swimsuit top is designed to pull everything up and emphasize your curves.

Ensure you look for a top that has a necktie because it draws attention to your shoulders and neck making you appear taller and skinner, as well as adding additional support to the underwire.

When choosing a bottom to go with your top, try high waisted swimsuit bottoms, which are more constructed and shape your silhouette.

Halter Swimsuit

For those less confident girls, a halter top swimsuit will work best as it provides with coverage but also flatters the hourglass figure.

The halter top provides you with the lift you need and visually minimizes a larger bust. For a bottom, a skirt and a side tie bikini bottom look great.

Beautiful ideas. Problem is most of those women don’t have true hourglass shapes.

  • Kristin

This article was so helpful. I know I’ll be able to use this information for future reference when choosing a new swim suit for the summer.

  • Shania

I agree with misty these girls do not have a true hour glass shape they a stick thin super models not everyday women. But good ideas

  • Isa

None of these girls have an hourglass shape. An hourglass figure is much more volumptuous: Marilyn Monroe, Scarlett Johansson, Salma Haye, Kelly Brook. Not really more modern, Victoria’s Secret models. These girls are far too thin. They all lack hips and boobs (most of them).

    But good ideas.

  • Nellie

These models don’t have hourglass figures. Look at how narrow their hips are – posing techniques (jutting out a hip to the side) gives the illusion of a broader, more curvaceous pelvic area. In fact, the models have boyish, non-feminine bodies. Look at the huge mannish shoulders of the model in the last pic!

I like second girl. She looks real.

  • Erika

Good God, are you serious? These chicks are SKINNY with no hourglass figure to them. I am a size nine and very curvy. I also have a bit of junk in the trunk and a little tummy. Do these models? no. Come on. Show real women!

  • REAL

I think fatsos (^) need to stop confusing “hour glass” and “curvy” with just plain fat. When people talk about girls with beautiful hour-glass bodies or even curvy bodies, they ARE referring to skinny girls who have a noticeable “curve” from the smallest point in their waist to the furthest point in their hips. They are NOT talking about the many bulges and bumpy hills on a chucky girls body. GET IT STRAIGHT. Just saying.

this chicks are tooth picks, i am a hourglass figure and we are wayyyy wayyy more curvy. and we have big hips, boobs, and we have junk in the trunk. this are skinny chicks :( dissapointed didn’t help

  • Layleah

Excuse me, but just because they’re thin does not mean they don’t have an hourglass shape. you don’t need to be fat, or have big tits and huge hips to be an hourglass. It’s about proportion (broad shoulders that are equal to your hips, and a small waist) etc. There is no rule stating think women can’t be hourglass shaped.

Hourglass figures are all about waist to hip RATIO.waist/hip. For example, my measurements are 34-26-39. 26/39=.67 Some people think “curvy” or “hourglass” to be more overweight. It’s a misconception. I’m 5’5 and weight 120

  • Faith

I am an hourglass figure I am 37 26 37 5″5 and around 120 – 123, however none of these women are actually hourglasses one is compeatly boyish the others lack the waist except Candice who is a spoon and lacks a bust when not modeling in VS padded bras.

I think it’s funny because every comment says something like: “These models don’t have hourglass figure”, “They’re way too skinny” …
Well, we should remember that these girls or models are supposed to be that skinny. We’re not talking about “junk in the trunk” or boobs. This is about FIGURE.
    I’m a hourglass figure and i’m skinny.
You’re confusing being “curvy” and being “hourglass”. It doesn’t matter if you’re fat or skinny, it’s all about proportion.
I agree with the comment of Layleah and REAL.
Girls, before you talk, you should get your facts straight.

Actually none of the models have an hour glass figure. Not because of their boobs or other assets but for they do not have their hips and shoulders meet. THAT’S what an hourglass figure is. And for the individual who said that having a tummy, boobs, etc. was chunky and disgusting is ignorant and people like that do not need to be here on the Internet.
