As you probably know, Barbie, the most popular doll around the world, is turning 50 next year. A grand show dedicated to this golden anniversary is to be staged during the in February.

No one knows for sure names of designers to create the garments models will be wearing but what we are aware of is that iconic shoe designer, , is going to make for this terrific runway show.

All the , worn by 50 models, will be in Barbie Pantone 219 Pink except for the soles of course. When asked what the motivation was to design Barbie Louboutin said:

I guess I always had a little “girlie” side who liked Barbie. Barbie needs to wear great because every girl needs to wear great .’

Personally I’m very glad Louboutin was not among those who decided to be out from the show. I love his and think the catwalk models wearing Barbie-inspired clothes will look magnificent in his red-sole pumps.

We talked about retro shoes earlier.

Let’s continue our theme.

Wedges

Seventies

came from a shoe-making family. Once he said:

I’d be surprised if I’d got into this business if my dad hadn’t been in it. I grew up watching being made.’

His first shop on the King’s Road, named Cobblers To The World, became a place often visited by rock stars and celebrities who could buy wedge with ankle straps in peach, yellow, pistachio and blue snakeskin, and thigh-high, satin-lined black leather boots.

Soon after had showed a collection of wedge designs very similar to his originals, de Hevilland restarted his own-name brand and created a new series of wedge for Frost-French’s lingerie-inspired catwalk collection. The stole the show and de Havilland transfixed a new generation.

Now, many celebrities wear modern versions of his original designs. For instance, , or .

I had to keep the smiles under wraps because that’s not the image I have of myself any more, but it was quite amazing. Good for the kids to see what I used to do. I don’t think I’ll ever do it again … I find fashion and perfume is where I’m more comfortable.”

She compares notes with the magazine:

I’m not pregnant, and I’m not trying to get pregnant at the moment,” she tells, “I’m so lucky to have the boys [Brooklyn, 9; Romeo, 6; and Cruz, 3] and they’re such great kids. Nice, free spirits and incredibly polite, which I think is very important.”

It takes a lot of energy, and the thought of having another baby now would be a little bit much”

Maybe in a year or two but right now, I’m having amazing career opportunities and I want to enjoy the boys.”

About her spirituality:

I’m really positive. I think that’s the way you have to be. I believe you visualise it and it will happen. I’m very in touch with my spiritual self in that way.”

We get on really, really well.. We are so lucky to have each other. He’s happy with his football. It’s a big challenge for him here, and as a family, we’re happy. We’ve never really rowed a lot. About new kitchen adventure:

She’s recently become a fan of making cupcakes.

I’m very good at lasagna and spaghetti Bolognese,” she says. “I don’t eat them myself because I’m vegetarian. But for David the night before a game, it’s good to make sure he has protein and carbohydrates. … I’m very good at Dora The Explorer cupcakes too – out of a packet.”

About her signature style:

I wouldn’t want to stop experimenting, but at the same time I do have certain signature things. For instance, I always wear Christian Louboutins … Hermes are my signature bag.”

Now I want to make preview for French and American covers.

for French magazine November 2008

’s so beautiful on French November 2008 cover. The beautiful photoshoot of her is To Die!

The wholeheartedly anticipated age issue features by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Penelope Tree by Bruce Weber, Anna Selezneva and by Mario Sorrenti, and the long-awaited release of Ryan McGinley’s buzzed-about cooperationwith Raquel Zimmermann.

The most fascinating editorial? Hands down “De 10 a 60 ans.”

Also photographed by Inez & Vinoodh, this Roitfeld-styled spread features a successfuly and “gracefully aging” Eniko Mihalik.

While some argue that the “younger” photos are somewhat ominous, the photographs are so well-rendered and infallible conceived that while decidedly spooky, the general tenor is still beneficial nonetheless.

Plenty of celebrities are fond of collecting clothing now.

The sales are booming as never before. However, footwear is not so popular with collectors. Probably, it’s just a matter of time…

Retro babe

Some footwear designers have created their recent collections on the basis of vintage ones.

For example, in the early 2000s, , inspired by ’s Seventies’ platforms, produced a collection leading to a resurrection of the shoe designer’s career. Now de Havilland’s fantastic pop-art python-skin heels regularly sell for high prices at auctions.

Terry de Havilland platform shoes

Original by top designers of the past such as , and are also hunted down by collectors from various countries.

Audrey Hepburn

was photographed in vintage footwear, sparking great interest in the original models of .

caused a stir when she was photographed at the Helpmann Awards in Australia wearing a nice pair of vintage limited-edition Roger Vivier stilettos, studded with crystals.

Roger Vivier shoes

There are still plenty of available, many of them by iconic designers, for relatively little money.

You can buy a pair for half a price of your skirt or blouse.

Here is a list of designed by couturiers of the past. They surely deserve your attention and can be good pieces in any collection.

Salvatore Stilettos

Mid-fifties

Salvatore is famous for the quality of his craftsmanship and the extravagance of his designs. His stilettos were considered glamorous and a whole generation of Hollywood stars loved wearing them.

was one of those who preferred his heels, she owned 40 pairs.

From 1956, stilettos became much higher after the Italians started to strengthen plastic heels by running an aluminium spigot down the shaft.

Salvatore Ferragamo

Perhaps the most well-known pair of stilettos were the scarlet satin rhinestone-studded stilettos that became famous after starred wearing them in the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Gentlemen Prefer blondes

and Jane Russell show off their footwear in Some Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

In 1999 the original were sold at Christies in New York for $42,000.

It’s worth collecting them for they represent the glamour of a golden Hollywood age and just because they look beautifully and are perfectly made.

Pilgrim Pump

Early sixties

These were very popular with ladies in the early Sixties. They were flat and square-toed, designed to be worn with short skirts.

In 1965, Vivier’s series of Pilgrim pumps, as they were later called, complemented a collection of ’s Mondrian-inspired mini-dresses.

The became incredibly popular among duchesses and ordinary dolly birds as they looked nice and were comfortable and easy to wear.

Pilgrim pumps Vivier

That year Vivier sold over 200,000 pairs. His customers were the Duchess of Windsor and Catherine Deneuve, Jackie Onassis, and many other famous women.

, a shoe designer says:

Vivier’s spoke by themselves. He understood that a shoe has a bone structure and that has to be perfect. He covers his with beautiful embroidery and embellishment, but underneath it all is a perfect plain pump with perfect proportions - pure perfection.’

You can collect them for at least two reasons: the Pilgrim pump was the most imitated shoe shape of the decade and it is associated with the sophisticated chic of Sixties Paris.

Andre Ankle Boot
1964

In the early Sixties, such boots were considered to be fit only for old ladies. The Parisian couturier changed all that. His space-age ankle boots became extremely popular when they were shown in his 1964 Moon Girl collection. It was more than a sensation.

Andre Courreges anckle boots

The boots were comfortable, easy to pull on and off, in soft white kid.

However, soon got furious as some shoe designers, such as Kurt Geiger, Sacha and Ravel, started copying the boot.

He had to ban the Press from his shows for the next few seasons.

You can add them to your collection since many fashion pundits are tipping the Sixties for the next big revival, so get in first with some covetable originals, which also play a fascinating part in fashion history.

To be continued…
