Diane von Furstenberg’s Pre-Fall 2012 collection wasn’t very feminine or romantic. Instead, the designer used some harsh elements like studding, chains, snaps and zips. She made a few really punk looks with loose rough outfits in black perforated fabrics. However, there was place for softer garments, elegant but comfortable, even sexy.

Dresses in Diane von Furstenberg’s Pre-Fall 2012 collection were lovely, especially those in straight silhouette and two-tiered skirts. Cropped pants and silk blouses with frills looked classy and elbow-high gloves and big sunglasses added chic to the looks. The yellow coat was simply perfect.

Accessories were very important in Diane von Furstenberg’s Pre-Fall 2012 collection. Bags which ranged from tiny evening clutches and Chanel-style pieces with chain handles to large roomy totes were beyond stylish as were gloves, some of which came fingerless. Footwear didn’t impress, except for the grey suede knee-high boots with leather toes.

What needs special attention is the color scheme which was amazing. Lemon was combined with red and black, delicate pink with brown and mustard, deep red with light blue. These hues normally don’t match but in Diane von Furstenberg’s Pre-Fall 2012 collection they looked beautiful.

If we speak about the color scheme, then the trendiest tones for the upcoming fashion season are: black, white, stone, metallic, beige, burgundy, dark blue, chocolate, deep violet, khaki and red. Bright hues are scarce, which is normal as we prefer wearing darker colors during autumn and winter.

Materials that prevail in Fall/ Winter 2011/ 2012 shoe collections include: ordinary leather, patent and reptile skins, suede and satin. There is also a lot lace and occasional fur this season.

Marc Jacobs along with Proenza Schouler are nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year. And the third person to join these designers is Alexander Wang, who’s taken home two CFDA awards already, two years in succession. He is actually nominated for three categories, the one already mentioned, Accessory Designer of the Year and Swarovski Awards for Menswear. So, he will definitely win at least one. Good luck anyway!

I’m also happy to see the Olsen sisters as nominees for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear category for their The Row line. I do hope they take the accolade.

Orange. It’s vibrant and energetic and seems to be the most exciting color trend of Spring/ Summer 2011 fashion season.

Many designers used orange in plenty in their collections. Issa, Prada and Marni used the hottest tints of orange creating the illusion of fabrics burning on skin. Max Azria and Alberta Ferretti opted for softer hues and combined those with neutral colors like black and beige making outfits more versatile.

White. This color abounds in almost every Spring/ Summer 2011 collection. Now not only short white dresses are in trend but also mannish white shirts, skinny white pants and maxi dresses in a variety of textures.

Deep purple and bright pink. These tones aren’t among the hottest color trends of Spring/ Summer 2011 but we can’t ignore them. Designers played with deep purple, dark violet, and neon pink, and though they used these scarcely the collections became more cheerful.

Christian Dior, Gucci, Prabal Gurung, Max Mara, Victoria Beckham and a few other designers opted for purples and violets to blend the generally delicate and emotionless color schemes.

Light grey and stone. While grey and stone tints may be considered dull and boring they look incredibly good in combinations with other tones. You can do this or try a total grey look with a couple of pretty accessories.

Lemon. Lemon in all its possible variations looks great. From very pale to saturated, lemon color was represented in Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Missoni, Monique Lhuillier, Mary Katrantzou, Nina Ricci and many other collections.

Black. Every season I write that black is the trend, and I’m sure I’ll do it again and again. Black is elegant and slimming, and these are the characteristics we love it for.

Blue and navy. Blue is a fantastic color in terms of using it in clothing. Garments of this tone become universal pieces as it is easily teamed up with other tones and prints. While Prada opted for electric blue, Paul Smith, Calvin Klein and Vivienne Westwood used more subdued tints. And Diane von Furstenberg played with different tones of blue.

Light green. Burberry Prorsum offered us this color, but there were examples of using it in Sass & Bide, Alberta Ferretti and other collections. Like it or not, but it is a Spring/ Summer 2011 trend.

Prints are going to be very trendy in Spring/ Summer 2011.

Floral prints. (Know all about floral print trend of Spring/ Summer 2011) Everyone from a fashion expert to an ordinary observer noticed that floral prints were becoming a new hot trend. Alberta Ferretti used huge flower patterns to decorate her dresses, Christian Siriano preferred to use blurred and indistinct floral prints, Dolce & Gabbana had florettes in lace while Marc Jacobs used the motif to create belts and headwear.

Stripes. Stripes weren’t as popular as floral prints, but we see them in many designer collections. In L.A.M.B. stripes are huge and multicolored, Paul Smith used pinstripes, and Prada experimented with black and blue, and orange and black.

Polka dots are interesting this season. Tiny dots come printed on dresses and shirts, and huge dots look beautiful on gowns.

As you see the color palette for Spring/ Summer 2011 isn’t much diverse but there are interesting hues to experiment with!

Diane von Furstenberg hasn’t worked alone on her Pre-Fall 2011 collection. Her new creative director, Yvan Mispelaere, helped her a lot. Speaking about the inspiration the two used to design the range Yvan said:

We looked back at the glorious American sportswear of the 1970′s. Diane’s focus, then as now, is on the working girl, and easy clothes to go to work with.”

Clothes from Diane von Furstenberg Pre-Fall 2011 collection, which are easy to wear and combine with other pieces in the wardrobe, will become perfect for office wear. They aren’t dull providing you with the chance to stand out of the crowd of your colleagues. And they aren’t vulgar despite their brightness.

Carey Mulligan, who was named the Best-Dressed Woman of the Year by Harper’s Bazaar magazine, opted for a gorgeous Chanel dress from the French label’s Fall/Winter Haute Couture Collection.

Gossip Girl starlet Leighton Meester looked wonderful in a custom-made Prabal Gurung dress. She was the visual proof of the fact Prabal Gurung deserved his award.

Kim Kardashian arrived at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards with designer Zac Posen wearing one of his fabulous designs – a floor-length blue gown with a colorful pattern in front.

Diane Von Furstenberg looked luxurious in her white knee-long dress and a fur coat over it. To finish her look the designer chose a pair of golden heels and a pretty clutch.

Pamela Love’s dress looked amazing – very feminine and sophisticated.

The Olsen sisters opted for their usual fur coats. They should definitely be more imaginative with their outfits!

Accessory designer Tory Burch also attended the ceremony of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards. She wore a tight-fitting floral-printed dress.

Keri Hilson’s option for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards looked great. Her assymentrical printed dress did attract attention.

The dress Karlie Kloss appeared in at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards was very beautiful by itself. But sincerely speaking it didn’t look impressive on the model. A woman with curves would look better in it.

The same thing I can say about Jacquelyn Jablonski who donned Thakoon creation to the ceremony.

Chanel Iman was wiser in choosing a dress for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards than her fellow models. The Altuzarra creation looked fantastic on her.

Another Gossip Girl actress, Blake Lively, also rocked Chanel design from the latest 2011 Spring/Summer Ready to Wear Collection. The see-through dress looked very sexy.

Christina Ricci strutted the red carpet with designer Peter Som and wore one of his elegant designs.

British model and TV host Alexa Chung also attended the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards. As usual she opted for a vintage look. By the way, Alexa is in the running to be named London’s style ambassador at the British Fashion Council’s annual gala on December 7. Some of her competitors include Emma Watson, Stella McCartney, and Tilda Swinton.

The prizes were bigger this year. Billy Reid received $300,000 (up from $200,000), while his runners-up Eddie Borgo and Prabal Gurung each took $100,000 (up from $50,000). However, as CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg noted “The main prize is the mentoring we provide.”

The rest of the CFDA finalists this year are: Christian Cota, Robert Geller, Oliver Helden and Paul Marlow of Loden Dager, Pamela Love of Pamela Love Jewelry, Moss Lipow and Gregory Parkinson. These young designers were treated to a keynote speech by Karl Lagerfeld.
