The decision of Selfridges, one of the biggest British retailers, to stop selling clothes for larger women seems to me very unreasonable. Taking into an account the fact ladies get bigger and taller year by year the store will be losing lots of its customers.

Selfridges have announced they no longer offer the Marina Rinaldi range, which includes sizes from 14 to 26. As a result, the largest size a woman can get now is 16, or 18 in some fashion lines, though those are scarce.

Selfridges

The retailer explains the decision stating that the ‘company does not believe larger lady customers, who often struggle to find clothes in their size, are good for its image’. This means that now plenty of women might be feeling hurt as they aren’t good for the image of Selfridges.

While Selfridges refuses to dress their larger customers other retailers seem to recognize modern people’s needs better. For example, in 2005 chiefs admitted the necesity to ‘inflate their sizes in order to cope with the fact that Britain’s young women are ‘blossoming’’. The same thing was done by .

The new policy of Selfridges immediately provoked huge discussions among ordinary people and fashion executives.

Cheryl Hughes, who runs modelling agency Hughes Models, said:

Half the country need size 16 or bigger. It’s disgusting that Selfridges won’t sell them.’

What do you think about the news?

I would call it a real discrimination. , brand that is loved by many, has chosen a completely wrong strategy to increase their profits.

Women with bigger breasts now have to pay more for bras of their size. This is a complete nonsense to my mind.

And no other brands or producers make their clients pay more for something that costs the same amount of money.

Women are going to confront M&S boss Sir Stuart Rose for what they see as unfair discrimination against them.

Fans of Sex And The City (SATC) have much to acclaim of as a small piece of its fashion hit stores and websites October 15.

Patricia Field for M&S shop

SATC designer and stylist , who has also laboured on the TV series Ugly Betty, The Devil Wears Prada, has signed up a £ 5 million deal with British label (M&S) to output a one-off fashion collection.

The new collection for by will be available from the last week of October.

It’s just amazing to be working with an iconic brand like ,” New York-based Field, 65, said in a statement.

I wanted to get involved with a brand that understands women of all ages, and which would work closely with me to create a collection that was relevant to them.”

The line is comprised of outfits, shoes and accessories and as you would hope it is jam-packed full of scent and Manhattan chic.

Patricia Field for M&S

Right: A gorgeous full-skirted trench coat lined with animal print satin. Features metallic rim buttons and a multistitch detail wide belt. Water resistant

Left: “The original blue dress was a long to-the-ground vintage 70s piece. I thought it would look more dramatic chopped into a mini so that the sleeves were longer than the dress. So I chopped it and Carrie wore it to a baby shower”

For bolder types there are sequins, most shocking in the form of a catsuit, more understated but still sexy professional wear for example, the high fashion skirt and slim, high waist, sleek trousers and many dresses.

Patricia Field for M&S

Left: A show-stopping style in hot red. This look is ahead of the trends – asymmetric will be huge in 2009. The gorgeous red patent belt features snake buckle detailin.

Right: A fabulous flirty dress with frills and tiers. The sexy plunge neckline and high waistline slim and lengthen the body.

There is surely a dress for all tastes with giving us her distinguishing spin on styles: the babydoll, shift, tube, belted, ruffled and asymmetric,

- and all in bright, vivid colours: pinks, reds, blues, funky patterns (spots, stars, stripes) and unusual materieals: jacquard, devore.

Patricia Field

Right :’The press loved this gorgeous devoré dress – it was featured as a key design during New York Fashion Week. Flattering, cute and flirty

‘This is a quintessential ‘Charlotte SATC’ dress – small on the top, full at the bottom. Here, I’ve put a tulle petticoat underneath it to really exaggerate the shape.”

Left: A strong and sexy look in a flattering wearable shape, this double belted dress is sure to make a statement. It’s made from ponte fabric – loved by the fashion cognoscenti for its clean modern look

All are classy, beaded linen shift dresses, jacquard dresses, trench dresses with leopard-print linings, and body-skimming toga-inspired dresses – all at available prices from $120 to $390.

The accessories are fab scarves and bags both flaunting Field’s New York inheritance and naturally, tapping into the Sex and the City connection.

Patricia Field for M&S

Right: A body-conscious dress which stretches and fits every curve. The dress features satin and animal jacquard panels to bring out your wild side

Left: A bold, strong, sexy dress with a snake buckle belt. It drapes daringly low at the front and fits close to the body. This dress will get you noticed!

My first thought was that it was a very unlikely pairing, then I thought, ‘This is genius,’ because what Field did in Sex And The City was to make four different women identifiable through their clothes,” British Vogue executive fashion editor Calgary Avansino told British newspaper The Telegraph.

That theory of ‘every woman’ is sort of what stands for,” she added. And it’s a smart move for M&S too. After all, a celebrity name can help add cache to a brand.

How successful are such alliances? The answer is in the sales.
