Naeem Khan’s Luxury for Resort 2012

Naeem Khan’s Resort 2012 collection was one of the most anticipated because everyone wanted to know what the designer would offer for his customers like Michelle Obama. The First Lady contributed a lot into the growth of Khan’s business after wearing five pieces designed by him to different public events.

Naeem Khan didn’t disappoint. His Resort 2012 collection featured plenty of luxurious and uber-feminine dresses even the most captious star would love to wear. Made of chic fabrics these pieces came in simple but sophisticated designs which were often complemented with exquisite embroidery that turned dresses into real pieces of art.

The color scheme ranged between hot red and yellow to nude and black-and-white combinations. Monotone items were scarce in Naeem Khan’s Resort 2012 collection though. Instead, the designer paid attention to the floral print trend.

My favorite pick is the red floor-length skirt with flounces cascading all over the split which is teamed up with an asymmetrical blouse featuring sumptuous red roses on the white canvas. The blue one-shoulder gown covered with embroidery all over also looks fantastic (although it’s really hard to say which of Naeem Khan‘s designs are the best.)

Everything She Touches Turns Into Gold (Michelle Obama Wears Reed Krakoff’s Bag and Those Fly Off Shelves in No Time!)

Everyone has admitted now Michelle Obama is a style icon in the US. Whatever she wears it becomes a top selling item. She’s boosted sales of Jason Wu, Isabel Toledo and a number of other designers. And it seems that it’s Reed Krakoff’s turn to benefit from the US First Lady’s fashion sense. This week Mrs Obama wore one of Krakoff’s bags to her daughter’s parent-teacher conference and within a few days all pieces of this design flew off shelves.

The bold-colored Reed Krakoff’s bag Michelle Obama carried to the conference costs nearly $1,000, but judging by the time the items were sold this price wasn’t that large in comparison with the reputation the bag would have after appearing in hands of the President’s wife.

So, facts say that everything Michelle Obama touches turns into something really valuable.

Victoria Beckham To Dress Future Queen – Kate Middleton

It must be a great honor for Victoria Beckham but she definitely deserves it. Kate Middleton’s representative has sent a request to the successful designer to provide a few dresses for the future queen to try. Although it doesn’t necessarily mean Kate will wear Beckham’s designs the fact Prince William’s fiancée has noticed Victoria’s talent is fantastic.

Victoria has expressed her wish once she would like to dress the US First Lady but since then she wasn’t lucky enough to get Michelle Obama’s attention. However, it would be as important for her to create for Kate Middleton.

Victoria Beckham said in the interview for Daily Telegraph she was going to send dresses from her Spring/ Summer 2011 collection:

Apparently, she [Kate Middleton] likes my clothes and has asked to see a selection. It will be from my current spring/summer collection.”

Praising Kate Middleton’s style Victoria said:

It’s tremendously exciting and I would be honoured if she were to wear my designs. I admire her tremendously. She’s a beautiful young girl, she has a wonderful figure and I think she wears clothes beautifully.”

Oscar de la Renta Criticized Michele Obama’s Choice of Alexander McQueen’s Dress

I’ve already written about how much I liked Alexander McQueen’s dress Michelle Obama wore to the dinner with the Chinese president. But as it turned out there were people who considered this choice as wrong. Oscar de la Renta, one of the most reputable designers of the US, has criticized the First Lady for wearing creations of European dressmakers instead of American ones. The criticism was based on the fact the Obama family went to China to promote Chinese-American trade and thus had to support American products in China instead of European ones.

Oscar de la Renta, who used to criticize Obama’s lack of support of American fashion a couple of years ago, has questioned why she chose the McQueen gown for the occasion.

He told WWD:

My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade — American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?”

He added that he personally didn’t need that support while there were other younger talented designers who needed help:

I’m not talking about my clothes, my business. I’m old, and I don’t need it. But there are a lot of young people, very talented people here who do.”

Michelle Obama’s Daring Fashion Option – Alexander McQueen’s Gown

I am not really a fan of Michelle Obama’s style but I can’t deny that sometimes the American First Lady does make great fashion options. For example, she donned a gorgeous but rather daring Alexander McQueen dress to the state dinner with China’s President Hu Jintao.

Michelle Obama looked impressive wearing a chic gown from Alexander McQueen Resort 2011 collection which was the first range Sarah Burton designed personally after Lee McQueen’s tragic death.

The Michelle Obama’s dress was a perfect option for the occasion not only because of the design but also due to the color. Red is a symbolic hue in China – the color of life, joy and luck.

Forbes Names Most Powerful Women In Fashion Industry

Once a year Forbes names Top 100 Most Powerful Women in the world. This list usually includes women presidents, first ladies, politicians, singers, writers and also those who are related to fashion industry.

I think it is not surprising that Michelle Obama in on the first place of this Forbes list. She does a lot for America and is very popular all over the globe. Lady Gaga, who is interesting to me as a great performer and a fashion icon, occupies the seventh position. Madonna, the singer and fashion designer, is number 29.

Heidi Klum, who has been a model for many years and now designs clothing for women, goes under 39th number while Sarah Jessica Parker, thanks to Sex and the City and her role in Halston, occupies the 45th place.

Super powerful, in my opinion, if we talk about the fashion industry, Anna Wintour is number 56 on the list. The highest-paid supermodel Gisele Bundchen is on the 72d position. Designers Tory Burch and Vera Wang occupy positions 88 and 91 respectively, while Donna Karan is on the 96th place. Angela Ahrendts, Chief executive in Burberry group, in number 97.

Mary Kate Olsen Graces Marie Claire September 2010

Fashion designer Mary Kate Olsen graces Marie Claire September 2010 issue. The girl has three covers and each is beautiful in its own way. According to the magazine the photo shoot was done at Mary Kate’s studio and she opted for clothes herself.

I like the blue cover the most. Mary Kate Olsen looks very fresh and feminine here. The dress flatters her and the blond hair blown about by the wind completes the romantic image perfectly.

Other pictures in Marie Claire September 2010 edition feature Mary Kate Olsen wearing pretty fur garments and oh-so-fabulous Givenchy red laced-up booties.

In the interview for Marie Claire magazine Mary Kate Olsen talks a lot about her and sister Ashley’s fashion lines – The Row, Elizabeth + James and Olsenboye - which are very different in style and price range. She also says that one of their dreams is to dress the First Lady Michelle Obama:

I’d love to get Michelle Obama in The Row. The simple suits and things. It’s all made in America, so why not?”

Actually The Olsens aren’t the only ones who want to design an outfit for Michelle Obama. Victoria Beckham said previously:

Talking about how their fashion sense has developed through the years Mary Kate Olsen told she and Ashley were taught to dress tastefully and elegantly from an early age.

She told America’s Harper’s Bazaar magazine:

Jason Wu To Launch Leather Goods Line

Inspired by success of his clothing line after Michelle Obama wore one of his designs, Jason Wu is planning to add a leather goods line to his growing fashion empire.

Following the launch of an eyewear range in March Jason Wu is not going to stop on this.

He said:

My eyewear collection is only the beginning of my accessories range, stay tuned for later this year – there is more to come. Now that I have an established ready-to-wear business it seems to be the natural step to expand into the world of Jason Wu. There is so much more I would like to do to complete the vision.”

Let’s wait and see what Jason will come out with. I hope it will be something worth seeing.

Rodarte Won Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award

Congratulations to Rodarte sisters who have won 2010 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award!!! Kate and Laura Mulleavy were able to beat finalists Proenza Schouler and Behnaz Sarafpour, and dozens of other nominees.

The winner is chosen by a jury of 2,500 designers, journalists, educators, cultural and corporate leaders stateswide on a few criteria. These include: 7 years’ experience in designing, ‘excellence, innovation, and enhancement of the quality of life’.

Rodarte will receive their prize at the National Design Awards gala dinner which is to be held on October 14 at Cipriani 42nd Street. And First Lady Michelle Obama will be the event’s honorary patron.

The Mulleavys aren’t new to fashion awards. Last year they took home CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award.

Best-Dressed At 2010 White House Correspondents’ Dinner

2010 White House Correspondents’ Dinner took place on Saturday (May 1 at Hilton Washington Hotel). It raised money for WHCA scholarships and honored the recipients of the organization’s journalism awards.

Although the dinner was not a glam event plenty of celebrities attended it wearing beautiful outfits.

It would be unfair to start from someone other than Michelle Obama. The First Lady looked stunning in a red hot gown from Prabal Gurung.

The designer felt priviledged and happy:

This is the most incredible gift. Couldn’t have asked for anything more. I am so happy and thrilled.”

Scarlett Johansson looked feminine and cute in a rosy Miu Miu dress and Prada shoes.

Jessica Simpson opted for a bright yellow Carolina Herrera dress and YSL pumps. She rubbed shoulders with Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe who wore blue floor-sweeping attire.

Kim Kardashian went for a daring plunging black dress and a pair of high heels.

Jessica Alba also wore a black gown that looked fabulous on her.
