As the Winter Olympic Games are coming closer we more and more often hear of outfits sportsmen will wear during the opening ceremony and the competitions.
We already know that Vera Wang is working on costumes for ice skaters. And now comes the news that Ralph Lauren has created new outfits for the US Olympic team.

The 70-year-old designer has made a range of sportswear – the Polo Ralph Lauren Olympic collection – for athletes to don during the opening ceremony of the 21st Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada on February 12.
The collection is said to have been inspired by “classic” outfits worn during the 1932 competition in Lake Placid.
Ralph’s son David Lauren – who is senior member of staff at the Polo range – commented:
We always look back to study history as we create our designs and are always inspired by the classics. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) came to us because they were looking for something that was thoroughly American, and classic but modern.”
And this is what usually Ralph Lauren’s lines are focused on. However, the giant fashion label has also taken a modern but “relaxed” feel.
David added to the USA Today newspaper:
This time, the USOC wanted something that’s a lot more sporty, technical-oriented, a little more relaxed.”
Ice dancer Tanith Belbin is delighted by the fact she will wear clothing made by an iconic designer.
She said:
Obviously, Lauren’s one of the most, if not the most, iconic American designers ever. He just really respects the roots of American heritage. It’s great to have such an interestingly designed collection. I know that’s something that all the winter athletes were jealous of when we saw the Beijing Games. We wanted to stand out and look really well put together.”

I think there is no woman who doesn’t like watching ice skating. We love the music, the performances and of course the costumes. But have you ever thought who makes those beautiful outfits? Our favorite designers!
Vera Wang is one of such couturiers who spend lots of time creating costumes for skaters. And it’s not just a mere coincidence that she works in this sphere. Long time ago Vera Wang liked skating. She even tried out for the national championships in the US in 1968. But unfortunately or fortunately, she failed to make the team and decided to turn to desingning.

Now she is a world-known designer but skating is still appealing for her. However, she finds it tougher to make figure-skating outfits than Oscar dresses. When working on those she has to create a special atmosphere, listen to music, think of the performance.
She said:
I have to have the music for a skating costume and that’s not the way I normally work. There is more pressure than an Oscar dress in a strange way. You wouldn’t want someone to lose Olympic gold because their sleeve ripped off.”
Vera, 60, is not the only designer who makes outfits for sporting occasions. Ralph Lauren will also be working on pieces for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada, later this year.

Women’s fashion is becoming more and more masculine. If last few seasons military jackets were top trendy, this season we see lots of classic and not-so-classic suits in designers’ collections. But suits for women are softer and more delicate.

This combination of androgyny with femininity looks nice and the photo shoot for Elle January 2010 edition with Brooklyn Decker is just another proof of my words.

The American fashion model is featured as a female dandy wearing a perfect Ralph Lauren cashmere three piece suit. She looks elegant and chic, though a bit too mannish.

As well as Ralph Lauren and Stella McCartney Michael Kors claims his pieces are timeless and one can wear them forever. This is also the reason why designer could have survived the recession.

The renowned fashion designer believes sales of his clothing line have not dropped during the ecoomic downturn because he has always worked hard to create designs that don’t become out-of-date.
He said:
What has happened with the economy has re-enforced the things that I always thought. The idea that something should be unexpected but at the same time timeless, the fact that I think that most clothes should be seasonless. Things have to be versatile.”
Michael is one of those designers whose popularity rises day by day. Maybe it is due to the fact he makes things that are sometimes eccentric but always good-looking and fashionably universal.

To tell you the truth I have never seen such a casual collection from Ralph Lauren before. It’s interesting of course but very unexpected.
No elegance of sophistication is seen in the garments but they do look great for daily teenage wear.

As Ralph Lauren explained he looked to Dust Bowl era workers—”the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer woman”.
As it turns out the designer wanted to celebrate what is truly and uniquely American. And he succeeded.

The Spring/Summer 2010 collection was presented at New York Fashion Week. It is full of denim – all mashed up in a variety of color washes and levels of destruction.
Ripped denim boyfriend trousers go with workwear shirts, mannish vests and newsboy hats; Holly Hobbie housewife dresses are matched with caps and platform sandals – everything is comfortable and reserved. No bright details or embellishments are used.

However, there are some evening dresses – not too much equisite but still nice-looking. I especially liked a silver gown made to look like a pair of overalls. Really unusual designer desicion!

In tough times people tend to invest into practical things of high quality.
Ralph Lauren is the designer who understands this and that is why he has decided to create a line of watches that people will want to own for many-many years.

The designer teamed up with Johann Rupert from watch specialists the Richemont Group to work on the line.
He said:
I hate the idea that when something is old, you throw it out. I like people to save and cherish things. I wanted to design the finest-quality watch. And although they are accessories on one level, in this economy, people are looking for a quality watch that they can keep forever.”
The collection is Lauren’s debut line of watches. It includes the rose-gold Slim Classique and the diamond-set stirrup, £17,600 or $29,528.27.
While the designer is so conscious about practicality of his own lines he, himself, isn’t as practical about the watch he wears.
He says:
I own a Panerai, originally made for the Italian navy. It’s bigger than my arm, but I wear it over a leather jacket!”
Ralph is full of plans. Next year he is going to launch a fine-jewelry collection.
He commented:
We’re working in a slow and careful way. I just want to see what I can say that’s new. I might put pearls with an army shirt. I like to mix things up.”
The exquisite watch collection is available in selected Ralph Lauren boutiques, independent jewelers and watch retailers worldwide.

Last night was very special for fashion designers. CFDA Awards is a Glam Event that is interesting for ordinary people and is hold-breathing for those who can get the award.
Ralph Lauren was admitted the most favorite American designer. He received the first-ever Popular Vote award winning the majority of the 15,000 online votes.

Mr. Lauren, whose fans are style stars Blake Lively and Angelina Jolie, accepted his award wearing a tuxedo jacket and jeans.
Rodarte sisters – Kate and Laura Mulleavy – got Womenwear Designer of the Year, that is absolutely deservedly!
Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez were awarded with Accessory Designer of the Year.
Alexander Wang amazed everyone wearing shorts to the ceremony but this didn’t bother him and Subversive’s Justin Giunta to take home the Swarovski Awards for young designers.

The new fashion season Fall 2009-Winter 2010 is already close to us and that means it’s high time we spoke about trends.
This post will give you information about tendencies in glove fashion.

First of all I’d like to say that gloves themselves are a hot trend this season and designers paid lots of attention to them.
Gloves are incorporated into many outfits and certainly add much sophistication and glamour to them. So, what is going to be top fashionable this fall and winter?
1. Leather gloves. I don’t think you are surprised to know that, because leather gloves are always in style.
They are classic and if you want to have a pair to be appropriate now and ten years later this is exactly what you need.

Besides, there are various designs for you to choose from. The only thing to limit your choice is that all pairs of this season are rather long, they never end right at your wrist!
I love the style Zac Posen offered – long over-elbow clinging gloves, they look really perfect.
Elbow-length gloves also look great.
Those which are a bit shorter than that are presented in a huge variety: different colors, fingerless, tight or loose-fitting gloves.
