Peplums on the Runway

Peplums come on elegant dresses and jackets, girlie blouses and tops, eccentric pants and shorts. And due to so many variations there are plenty of ways to wear them. However, if you decide to try this trend there are a few things you should take into account, for example the illusion peplum creates.

Peplums can have both a slimming and voluminous effect, cover your problem areas and accentuate the assets. Here are some tricks to take into account:

• To accentuate your waist, look for a peplum on a jacket that is short and sweet. It should end right above your hips. Use a belt.

• To add volume to your hips, wear a skirt (dress) with peplum that is puffy and fancy and ends in the mid-section of your hips.
• To make hips look narrower, opt for a sleek peplum with no volume which finishes after the widest area of your hips.
• Minimize a large bust by wearing a skirt with a darker color on peplum and a lighter color underneath.
• Go for a total black outfit with a peplum. It will have the biggest slimming effect.

A few more things to consider when choosing for a piece with a trendy peplum:

• Avoid A-line skirts with peplums, only pencil skirts will work to balance your body proportions right.
• The hem of your skirt (dress) should hit above the knee and just below it. If you go for a longer design you will look shorter because peplum tends to cut the length of legs.
• Wear high heels with peplums to keep proportions right.

Proenza Schouler, Dolce & Gabanna, Emilio Pucci, Prada and other fashion brands showed us their vision of the trendy cropped top this season. Some of these tops were long enough to almost cover the midriff while others were very short and could work as a fancy substitution of bras. To avoid spreading a vulgar look designers decided to provide greater coverage of other areas of a woman’s body. They paired the cropped top with maxi or midi skirts, high-waisted skirts and pants as well as pleated skirts to avoid focusing attention on a bare stomach.

Among the celebrities who have already tried the hot Spring/ Summer 2012 trend there are Nicole Scherzinger, Selena Gomez, Scarlett Johansson, Miley Cyrus, Dakota Fanning and others. Gwyneth Paltrow was the first to wear one of Emilio Pucci’s risqué designs while Selena Gomez’s one was the most daring.

Ruffles of the Spring/ Summer 2012 season are very diverse. There are no limitations in size or volume and they are used everywhere. They decorate dresses, trousers, tops, skirts, swimwear, bags and even shoes making those look fresh and flirty.

Ruffles On The Runway

Some designers, like Preen, decided to use ruffles as a lovely detail, so they added them to collars, sleeves, hems and waists (peplums, another hot Spring/ Summer 2012 trend).

John Galliano collection featured dresses with ruffles strategically placed at areas which a modest woman would cover.

Moschino’s spring looks were girlie and summery.

Marchesa ruffles were sophisticated and luxurious – ideal for the red carpet.

Alexander McQueen brand went to the extreme with ruffles. They didn’t work as details, they made the outfits of the collection.

How to wear ruffles for spring

• Ruffles tend to focus attention on them, which means they are great for creating illusions. Wear ruffles at areas you feel proud of, this way you will detract attention from your problem areas. Ruffles add volume, so if you have a small bust or narrow hips wear ruffles at these places.
• Ruffles are usually the accent of an outfit. So when you choose to wear them make sure you don’t overdo with your look.
• Merge ruffles with other spring trends: pastel colors, sheerness (use ruffles to cover your modesty), etc.
• Don’t stick to simple looks with ruffles. Experiment and go for outfits which will make you stand out.

The classic heritage print – paisley – does not come in all designers’ collections like floral print does. But if it appears you won’t forget it soon. Stella McCartney, Matthew Williamson, JW Anderson, Jil Sander and Emilio Pucci focused on paisley in their Spring/ Summer 2012 ranges and each has done it in its own unique way.

Stella McCartney and Jil Sander played it safe and made paisley look delicate and elegant, even on pajamas (by the way, it seems like Stella has a double trend hit!).

Emilio Pucci and Haider Ackermann added color to the print and made it stand out.

Matthew Williamson put paisley into embroidery while Paul Smith used the print to make masculine outfits look softer and more womanly.

No matter what way you choose to wear paisley, get ready to be the topic of your friends’ discussion as paisley just can’t stay unnoticed.

Bright Colors. In spring and summer color is probably one of the most important things, which is totally understandable since everybody longs for brightness after winter monotony. Jeans in red, pink, aquamarine, green and violet colors have flooded stores and streets. You can play it safe and wear your trendy pair with a simple white, black or silver top, or go bold and do color-blocking with other bright tones.

Bleached jeans. This type of jeans has kind of retro feel but you can make them look modern by wearing with faded t-shirts, cut off vests or fringed tops.

High-waisted jeans. With bra and cropped tops so popular now there is no wonder that high-waisted jeans and pants are also getting trendy. Cover your belly button with a pair of perfect jeans that fit you well. It can be wide-leg, too.
