The Bristish supermodel Kate Moss opted for a similar-to-Posh’s dress – a sheer black Flamenco-style tiered dress with a super-long train. To cover her dignity a bit Kate donned a black blazer. Beautiful!

Swarovski name became popular in fashion industry thanks to little but shining product. In the end of the 19th century Daniel Swarovski, Austria-Hungary Empire citizen, escaped from his homeland Bohemia taking with him the secret of new incredible crystal cutting.

A few years later exceptionally shining crystals beautified fingers, ears and necks of the most recognized women in the world. Swarovski bijouterie was officially acknowledged as a worthy substitution for precious stones and metals.

Nowadays Swarovski crystals are often more pricey than jewelry with natural emeralds, diamonds and sapphires. And the fifth generation of Sir Daniel’s heirs keeps the technology of crystal cutting and production top secret. And the crystals are still an obsession for millions of fashionistas.

Unlucky violinist Daniel Swarovski, who trained to be an engineer, was able to invent and patent a machine allowing to facet natural crystals quickly and absolutely flawlessly. This happened in 1891. The products were so brilliant that Daniel understood he had to leave Bohemia and find another place where he could work. Otherwise his secret technology would soon be stolen by competitors who were in plenty in Bohemia.

Swarovski moved to Wattens in Austria, married and kept on working to improve his machine. 20 years later together with his sons he invented the new way of production and faceting those crystals we adore now.

Watch can be fashionable!

Fashion for has a pretty short history. For a long period of time models of were designed exclusively by watch companies who produced them. However, about 20 years ago fashion houses decided that this market niche had to be occupied either and started creating various styles so that women had great variety of items to satisfy their tastes.

Alfred Sung launches L’Oréal Fashion Week with a bridal collection. Super wedding dresses!

Alfred Sung, whose name is always bolded in a press release with being preceded by “legendary Canadian” or “iconic Canadian” opened the ceremony of the 16th edition of the semi-annual event of L’Oreal Fashion Week with a bridal show titled “The White Collection.”

Alfred Sung Bridal spring 2009

He was the first of more than 50 designers from across Canada featuring spring/summer 2009 collections.

The legendary designer said he got the inspiration from the late film star and style icon Grace Kelly when designing his collection. The influence was translated both to the dresses and hairstyles.

Alfred Sung Bridal spring 2009

I’m most inspired by beauty, beautiful things. And what is more beautiful than the bride on her wedding day?” asks Sung. “I look to the icons, like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn for their timeless style.”

The wonderful gowns varied from fluid to more form-fitting. Voluminous, full-bodied silk taffeta creations and elaborate lace and satin gowns shared the runway with softer, more slender, draped georgette dresses. Lush materials, including angel tulle, silk essence chiffon and organza, were also incorporated into the mix.

Alfred Sung Bridal spring 2009

The designer added shimmering beads and crystals, lending dazzle to bodices, buttons, necklines, waistlines and dress straps.

Some of the gowns had the intricate accents incorporated on a larger scale, like an elaborate floral beaded pattern cascading along a dramatic lace overlay.

Plenty of celebrities are fond of collecting retro clothing now.

The sales are booming as never before. However, retro footwear is not so popular with collectors. Probably, it’s just a matter of time…

Retro babe

Some footwear designers have created their recent collections on the basis of vintage ones.

For example, in the early 2000s, Miu Miu, inspired by Terry de Havilland’s Seventies’ platforms, produced a collection leading to a resurrection of the shoe designer’s career. Now de Havilland’s fantastic pop-art python-skin heels regularly sell for high prices at auctions.

Terry de Havilland platform shoes

Original by top designers of the past such as , Beth Levine and Roger Vivier are also hunted down by collectors from various countries.

Audrey Hepburn

Kate Moss was photographed in vintage footwear, sparking great interest in the original models of .

Cate Blanchett caused a stir when she was photographed at the Helpmann Awards in Australia wearing a nice pair of vintage limited-edition Roger Vivier stilettos, studded with crystals.

Roger Vivier shoes

There are still plenty of retro available, many of them by iconic designers, for relatively little money.

You can buy a pair for half a price of your skirt or blouse.

Here is a list of retro designed by couturiers of the past. They surely deserve your attention and can be good pieces in any collection.

Salvatore Ferragamo Stilettos

Mid-fifties

Salvatore Ferragamo is famous for the quality of his craftsmanship and the extravagance of his designs. His stilettos were considered glamorous and a whole generation of Hollywood stars loved wearing them.

Marilyn Monroe was one of those who preferred his heels, she owned 40 pairs.

From 1956, stilettos became much higher after the Italians started to strengthen plastic heels by running an aluminium spigot down the shaft.

Salvatore Ferragamo

Perhaps the most well-known pair of Ferragamo stilettos were the scarlet satin rhinestone-studded stilettos that became famous after Marilyn Monroe starred wearing them in the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

In 1999 the original were sold at Christies in New York for $42,000.

It’s worth collecting them for they represent the glamour of a golden Hollywood age and just because they look beautifully and are perfectly made.

Roger Vivier Pilgrim Pump

Early sixties

These were very popular with ladies in the early Sixties. They were flat and square-toed, designed to be worn with short skirts.

In 1965, Vivier’s series of Pilgrim pumps, as they were later called, complemented a collection of Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian-inspired mini-dresses.

The became incredibly popular among duchesses and ordinary dolly birds as they looked nice and were comfortable and easy to wear.

Pilgrim pumps Vivier

That year Vivier sold over 200,000 pairs. His customers were the Duchess of Windsor and Catherine Deneuve, Jackie Onassis, and many other famous women.

Christian Louboutin, a shoe designer says:

Vivier’s spoke by themselves. He understood that a shoe has a bone structure and that has to be perfect. He covers his with beautiful embroidery and embellishment, but underneath it all is a perfect plain pump with perfect proportions – pure perfection.’

You can collect them for at least two reasons: the Pilgrim pump was the most imitated shoe shape of the decade and it is associated with the sophisticated chic of Sixties Paris.

Andre Courreges Ankle Boot
1964

In the early Sixties, such boots were considered to be fit only for old ladies. The Parisian couturier Courreges changed all that. His space-age ankle boots became extremely popular when they were shown in his 1964 Moon Girl collection. It was more than a sensation.

Andre Courreges anckle boots

The boots were comfortable, easy to pull on and off, in soft white kid.

However, Courreges soon got furious as some shoe designers, such as Kurt Geiger, Sacha and Ravel, started copying the boot.

He had to ban the Press from his shows for the next few seasons.

You can add them to your collection since many fashion pundits are tipping the Sixties for the next big retro revival, so get in first with some covetable originals, which also play a fascinating part in fashion history.
