I think there is no woman who doesn’t like watching ice skating. We love the music, the performances and of course the costumes. But have you ever thought who makes those beautiful outfits? Our favorite designers!
Vera Wang is one of such couturiers who spend lots of time creating costumes for skaters. And it’s not just a mere coincidence that she works in this sphere. Long time ago Vera Wang liked skating. She even tried out for the national championships in the US in 1968. But unfortunately or fortunately, she failed to make the team and decided to turn to desingning.

Now she is a world-known designer but skating is still appealing for her. However, she finds it tougher to make figure-skating outfits than Oscar dresses. When working on those she has to create a special atmosphere, listen to music, think of the performance.
She said:
I have to have the music for a skating costume and that’s not the way I normally work. There is more pressure than an Oscar dress in a strange way. You wouldn’t want someone to lose Olympic gold because their sleeve ripped off.”
Vera, 60, is not the only designer who makes outfits for sporting occasions. Ralph Lauren will also be working on pieces for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada, later this year.

Vera Wang is a designer who likes femininity and simplicity combined. And this idea is fully embodied in her Spring/Summer 2010 collection at New York Fashion week.

Pretty dersses made of light and often sheer fabrics (mostly chiffon) were the center of the line. All of coctail length they looked very womanly but without too luxe.
Embroidery and occasional gemstones adorned the frocks much. The dress I liked the most is the black one with flower-detail attached in abundance. A very glamourous piece!

The designer included lots of shorts into the range adding to the comfort of the wearer. Shorts were easily paired with blouses, basketball tees, an organza skirt combo, a metallic gauze halter tank and even a poufy ballerina skirt.

Slouchy leggings were nice to look at, too. Combined with a cascading top they looked fabulous.

Charity is a simple way to help people in need. It’s great if you do it not for PR but because you are truly compassionate and generous.
A group of world-famous designers were asked to help raise money for a charity organisation that deals with homeless families and women who lost everything but want to get back on their feet.
The task was easy and creative – just right for a designer – to decorate small papier-mâché houses which would later be sold on auction.
Among those who found time and desire to help were Oscar de la Renta, Issak Mizrahi, Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, Donna Karan, Victoria and David Beckham, Justin Timberlake and lots of other celebrities who had hardly ever dealt with designing but wanted to do something useful for people who suffer.
The houses that we got in the result were pretty little things – colorful and spirited – which might go under a Christmas tree.

Vera Wang’s house was the most delicate and exquisite. The designer decorated it with lace, crystals, and flowers. Very nice to look at!

Isaac Mizrahi made the cutest house. He used a lot of pink and sparkle.

Oscar de la Renta’s house is simple but sophisiticated just like his clothes – nothing looks out of place.

A prominent designer Vera Wang has declared she isn’t going to present her new collection at the runway show at the fashion week tents in New York in February.

In the interview earlier this month Ms. Wang had said that staging her usual fashion show would not be appropriate during a recession.
To do big shows, you really need shock and awe,” she said. “You need big accessories, you need power and drama in staging and in the clothing. I want to see what I think feels politically correct and feels appropriate from a business point of view at this stage.”
Ms. Wang has planned to show her collection at her boutique in Manhattan’s Soho district on February 19. A guest list will include from just 100 to 150 people, down from the usual 900 Ms. Wang invites.
We feel that the intimacy of a smaller venue will be the perfect backdrop for the collection and is an appropriate statement for the times,” Ms. Wang said. Of course the publicity of the labels is important but due to hard times we all are experiencing now the cost up to $500,000 is too much.
As we have already mentioned in previous posts Betsey Johnson and Carmen Marc Valvo have also decided to miss this fashion week. It’s a great disappointment for all of us but I think we should respect their opinions and put up with the situation. I hope that world authorities will find the way out of the crisis as soon as possible and we’ll be able to see the collections of our favorite designers in a usual format.
